Been seeing this pop up every few months for a decade. Honestly, I've given up making predictions. The last real update was a blog post where Martin said he was working on it, but that was years ago. At this point, my theory is he's written himself into a corner with the show's ending being so divisive—he might be reworking huge chunks to make the book's conclusion land differently.
I just hope it's finished eventually. My first copy of 'A Dance with Dragons' is literally falling apart from re-reads. The wait has killed the urgency for me; it'll be a nice surprise if it ever drops, but I'm not holding my breath. Probably see another Dunk & Egg collection first.

Don't expect it anytime soon, if ever. The timeline has stretched from 'maybe next year' to a permanent 'someday.' I've moved on to other series. If it comes, great, I'll read it. But checking his blog for news is a fool's errand. The show's ending might have even complicated his original plans, requiring more rewrites. We're all just waiting for a post that says 'finished.'

This question is a fandom rite of passage. I remember joining forums as a teen where people were sure it'd be out before season six. Now I'm in my thirties. The pattern's clear: a flurry of 'progress' updates, then silence, then a Wild Cards announcement. It's frustrating, but I'd rather have nothing than a rushed book that doesn't tie together the countless threads from 'Feast' and 'Dance'.
Part of me wonders if the public pressure has made the process miserable for him. How do you end a story with that much expectation? Still, the not-knowing is its own kind of agony for fans who invested in the books first.

"If you can't satisfy me with your mouth, then you'll have to satisfy me some other way."
In one swift motion, he tore off her flimsy top and skirt, tossing the shredded fabric aside. The implications of his actions became quite clear to Visenya. "Please, let me try again... with my mouth. I believe I can..."
"Quiet!" Lucian's voice reverberated off the walls of his bedchamber, instantly silencing her.
This was not the way she had envisioned her first time. She had imagined passionate kisses and tender caresses from a man who loved and cherished her. But Lucian was not capable of love, and he certainly didn't cherish her. Instead, she was cursed with a mate consumed by vengeance, and wanted nothing more than to watch her suffer.
———
Ten years had passed since dragons ruled over the world, and Visenya had taken her rightful place as the Lycan Queen. Vampires were forced into the shadows, as hunting and enslaving humans became punishable by death. Finally, the world found peace. However, everything changed when Dragon Lord Lucian emerged from his induced slumber, only to discover the annihilation of his entire race at the hands of Visenya's father. Stripped of her kingdom, Visenya was condemned to a life of servitude as Lucian's slave. The cruelest twist of fate awaited her when she learned that her long-awaited mate was none other than the vengeful Dragon Lord himself.
Consumed by their mutual hatred, will they be able to resist the powerful bond between mates? Or will Lucian push Visenya to her limits, only to regret it in the end?

Man, the wait is really starting to feel like a cruel joke at this point. I'll believe there's a release date when I see an actual book in my hands. George has been promising us for over a decade, and every time he posts a cryptic update, the fandom does this collective little dance of hope. Honestly, my best guess is never.
I’ve stopped waiting actively. I re-read the existing ones and just fill in the blanks with fan theories. The ending of the show, whatever its flaws, gave me a kind of closure, even if it wasn’t the one from the source. Until George sits down and types ‘THE END’ for real, I’m treating the story as perpetually unfinished. It's the only way to stay sane.
If we're talking about the actual last published book, 'A Dance with Dragons', the series isn't ended yet. That book closes with a lot of hanging threads, and honestly it felt like another massive setup book. Jon Snow gets stabbed at the Wall, Daenerys is lost in the Dothraki sea after her dragon torches a kid, and Tyrion is just kinda wandering around waiting to meet her.
So the real ending? We don't have it. Martin’s been writing 'The Winds of Winter' for over a decade. The TV show’s finale is all we have for a conclusion, but book fans generally expect a very different final act. I remember finishing ADWD and just staring at the last page, totally unsatisfied. It's less an ending and more a pause button nobody can unpause.
