How To Fix Bg3 Halsin Romance Bug In Patch 5?
The recent patch seems to have introduced issues with progressing Halsin's love quest in Baldur's Gate 3, and my playthrough is stuck. Anyone else hit this romance glitch after updating?

This problem has happened to one Halsin follower before, and to work around it, one can load a saved game before beginning the ‘Embrace Your Animal’ quest and make sure that Halsin gets all of his dialogues before the big scene with the party. If it doesn’t work, it’s kinda a bummer, though, because I wanted the story to be good, too. Unlikely pairings always manage to work their way into my heart, too, such as in the book ‘My Second Chance Mate is a Barbarian’ where a modern woman gets a second chance at life and she is suddenly bound to a fierce warrior clan leader in a completely foreign fantasy world. Their fated connection has all the troubles of a cultural clash mixed with the warrior’s protective instincts.

I have to say, I really enjoy playing with Halsin in 'Baldur’s Gate 3', and this bug was really annoying. In order to get around this bug, I replayed to the campsite with the rest of the party, made sure I had sufficient approval from Halsin, and then proceeded to not flirt with anyone else until his romance triggers fired off. I waited until Act 2 to start pursuing Halsin in order for it to be more stable as well.
Using the ‘Talk to Dead’ spell on Halsin seems to also reset him from whatever state he’s in and have him back to normal again. Also be sure to check all his journal entries for completed quests, and make sure they are all marked as complete. On PC, the ‘BG3 Script Extender’ might also help to fix this bug, but the script extender is a fairly complex piece of code and may require some technical knowledge to use.
There are also several patches floating about on Nexus Mods (such as this Halsin Romance Fix patch) but use at your own risk, as these will no doubt stop being updated once Larian patches the romance into the game every few weeks. Save often and try to find your own sequence in the mean time.

The Halsin romance bug in Patch 5 seems to be a fairly common problem. From what I can gather the problem stems from incomplete or confusing triggers for his questline. One thing that seems to work for me is completing other companion quests first (e.g. Shadowheart, Astarion, etc), and then coming back to Halsin to try and complete the appropraite dialogue for his approval or romance. Also, by using the console commands to add approval to him, or force him into dialogue that I would normally not have access to (through the dev console), it seems to “fix” the bug as well.
Additionally, when Halsin's flags are polyamorous, he may not change over to the correct flags when you've previously started to romance another companion. This can be fixed by breaking up with the other companions temporarily and then romancing Halsin. A mod that does fix script inconsistencies for Baldur’s Gate 3 is the 'Baldur’s Gate 3 Mod Fixer' but this is for PC and not officially supported by Larian.
For console users or those who prefer to play without mods, I've noticed that uninstalling and reinstalling the game (or loading from an earlier save point) has managed to fix the issue for me. The Larian Support Team are aware of this issue, and it would be great for you to report it through the official channels, hopefully it will get sorted for Patch 6.

The Halsin romance bug affected me too in Patch 5 of 'Baldur's Gate 3'. I eventually fixed it by reverting to an older save some chapters back and then continuing through the romance arc from there. Occasionally a game's script will get 'stuck' in a certain state (most often after long resting, but I've had it happen after simply traveling between areas for example) so I'd sometimes simply long rest a few times in the hope that his dialogue would 'reset' itself. Just completing all of the prerequisite quests for his romance (saving the grove from the tecu, dealing with Kagha, etc) also seems to 'reset' his dialogue to working properly again. (Note: verify game files via Steam/Larian launcher etc in case the problem is with corrupted data etc).
The temporary removal of any mods you’re running may also reveal whether or not they are interfering with this bug. If none of the above remedies work for you, a hotfix from Larian is always the safest route as they typically get out a patch within a few days for major bugs like this. In the interim, lookup the issue in the various community forums such as the game’s Reddit community as well as the Larian Games Discord and you may find other players with work-arounds for the issue.

Ugh, this bug is terrible. I had Halsin stuck in a 'We should talk' loop for ages. And for some reason the camp event wasn't triggering either. After much searching through the forums, I came up with a fairly complicated series of steps to 'fix' the bug. It involved going back to a save point before I even started Act 2, making sure I completed all tiefling and Druid event(s) in Act 1, and then long-resting (tilting the controller in frustration) for about 10-12 instances in the various locations of the Shadow-cursed lands until he finally started up and said something about Thaniel. Apparently, the game doesn't properly register that you've 'saved' Halsin from his Shadow-curse, and I had to get rid of all the other active romantic interests before he'd talk to me.

It’s probably easiest to just start a new playthrough. Follow all of the approval tips that you read on the forums (get approval high as quickly as possible, rest frequently, keep attention focused). Occasionally a save file just gets corrupted in a way that can’t be fixed without mods. That would be awful. Very time consuming, though.

A lot of people have commented on this before, and generally it works for a ‘redeemed’ or resistant Durge, but not so much for an ‘embrace’ Durge (since Halsin gained approval of the hero Durge through heroic actions, it would be somewhat difficult to maintain a high approval rating as a monster). But that would be some fun metagaming, in order to do good things in front of Halsin and evil things when he isn’t around. Of course, all of this would depend on good roleplaying of the Urge that you’re hiding, and of your hidden duplicity from your lover. Some really dark and complex roleplaying could be created here, and while there may not be specific written content for it, the scenario you create could be extremely rich.

Burning that bridge by cheating on them, however, removes that check on your behavior and has far-reaching consequences that can even alter the soul of your protagonist and change the ending for you.

For a more complete experience, remember the sound. There are various music mods which add songs to certain scenes. Some mods add ambient camp dialogue as well. For example, a soft romantic song for Natasha in her Act 2 scene could greatly change the feel of that scene instead of using the regular camp music. There are also small voice barks (none too long or out of place) added for combat and exploration alike, which make her feel even more present in the story. These various mods enhance the atmosphere of the existing story and are meant to complete the world in which the romance story takes place, rather than replacing the core of the story with an alternate version of events. And sometimes mood equals words.

This is more of an Easter Egg than a full story arc. Wyll needs to be in your party for the interactions with Mizora in the story, and then you can’t break the pact in Act 2. You then free her from capture, and after the Iron Throne and Ansur events in Act 3, you simply take a long rest, and she comes to you. The conversation is straightforward after that.

No. That would ruin a lot of great things about the fandom, in my opinion. Every morally ambiguous character needs to be romanced by every protagonist in the story. It's better that way. And there's nothing that says every intense relationship has to end in a kiss. The intense history between Wyll and Mizora is deeply toxic. All of the bitterness and twisted intimacy of their deal is what makes their situation so compelling. Turning it all into a romance would somehow ‘fix’ it all and ruin it.
This would also miss the point of a deep, complex, story driven relationship in the game. The relationship with the cambion focusses on a deep story about obligation, regret and reclaiming one’s soul. Turning her into a romanceable character would turn this in to just another villain-banging simulator. It would also clash greatly with the heroic profile of the Blade of Frontiers, Wyll. Can you imagine the hero of the story settling down with a cambion who gets off on the suffering of others? The doors that are not meant to be opened should not be opened. There are plenty of other complex relationships in the game that could be just as interesting, just in different ways.

The polyamory option is very specific and needs to be completed in a very specific order, mostly following the drow twins in Act 3. As opposed to other true throuples, this is a one time, very consensual arrangement. Trying to continue two full romances without this trigger will eventually blow up in your face.

One of the things I loved about getting into it with the Emperor in 'Baldur's Gate 3' was the real and weird mix of desire and fear he inspired from the very start. Oh boy, was I excited to see this story unfold. Building up a romance in this game isn’t about pouring out endearments and getting giggly and drooly in between. Instead there’s a lot of burden and a lot of choice to ponder while you’re having these moments of warmth and desire.
It feels a lot like balancing on the edge of a knife – and risk everything crashing to the floor at any moment! I do very much enjoy the choices I make influence the Empire’s fascinating Emporer and how our romance evolves in ways that are both genuinely wonderful and tense. It’s very engaging to play, and very real too – and not just a bunch of physical affection by any means. He’s very much part of the main story – and none of it is easy at all. A true rollercoaster of emotions, choices, and surprises – and I never wanted it to end! How could anyone not fall for him?!
