There are many scenes of personal growth for Paul in ‘Dune’. Probably the most significant for a reader, however, is his decision to take the Water of Life, an action which could have killed him, or brought him to full potential as the Kwisatz Haderach. It’s a scene of real spiritual crisis for Paul, and marks his transition from boy to leader. The rest of the novel follows Paul as he comes to terms with his powers, and is enabled by his relationships with others, not least Chani. His human connection, and the love he feels for her, ensures that even the messianic figure of Paul is influenced by his relationships with others. If you enjoy stories of personal growth and development, and the struggle of a main character with their destiny and their sense of identity, then you may enjoy The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss or the Attack on Titan series by Hajime Isayama.

This Dune primer includes character development for Paul Atreides throughout the novel, Dune, by focusing on several pivotal moments which affect his ability to survive and lead. Paul first grows up in a more safe aristocratic family but all of that is torn from him in the very beginning of the book as his family is betrayed and he watches as House Atreides falls while being attacked on the planet Arrakis where the rare and powerful spice melange is found. This event in his life sharpens him to become very perceptive and grows his foresight as he battles to save his own life in order to carry on his father’s work and to realize his own full potential.
A second significant transformation is undergone by Paul when he experiences his first visions of the future while underneath the influence of the spice in the melting pond on Arrakis. Paul sees scenes of people dying in terrible massacres brought on by a Holy War which he himself will incite. All he can see of his numerous children are their dying faces and he realizes the terrible burden which he has been given as the Kwisatz Haderach. There is also a need for Paul to reconcile his humanity with his given role in which he is destined to bring about great pain and suffering.
Lastly, Paul must confront the legacy of Jamis in a duel to the death. Not only does Paul have to defeat Jamis in combat, he must also come to terms with the moral implications of his actions. Paul’s acceptance of Fremen culture is shown through his willingness to kill Jamis and earn the respect of the native population. This moment marks a change in Paul’s life and defines his new identity of Muad’Dib. People who are interested in this kind of transformation should look into novels such as ‘The Left Hand of Darkness’ or the anime series ‘Code Geass’.

I woke up inside a novel, and not even as an important character.
I became a pretty background extra in a smut novel.
My brother, however, was the only normal person in the entire story.
His character setting was the one man the soft, delicate heroine could never win over.
He was the cold, unattainable Prince Charming she could never conquer.
When the heroine cried and confessed her love, he was studying.
When she offered him her whole heart and body, he was busy starting a company.
When she spiraled into scandals and nightlife, he was already a billionaire, calm and untouchable.
I thought he would live a quiet, ascetic life forever.
Until one night, I walked in on him at midnight…
holding a piece of clothing I recognized all too well, murmuring a name over and over, a name so familiar that my scalp tingled.
