I tend to prefer detective series where the protagonist isn't a cop or a PI, but gets drawn into mysteries by their profession. The 'Crossword Puzzle' mysteries by Nero Blanc? No, that's not a long arc. Hmm. Actually, the 'Cat Who...' books by Lilian Jackson Braun are a long-running series (like 30 books), but the 'detective' arc is… minimal. The guy just has intuitive cats. It's more of a comforting, repetitive small-town vibe than any real character progression. So maybe that's the opposite of what you're asking for. Scratch that.

The Lynley series is the classic here, right? Elizabeth George's 'Inspector Lynley' books. They're all massive doorstoppers, totally available on Unlimited. It's not just Lynley though; Barbara Havers is the true star for a lot of readers. Their partnership is so beautifully fractious and loyal.

You see them through personal tragedies, career upheavals, and the changing landscape of the Met. George doesn't shy away from putting her characters through the wringer, emotionally and physically. The mysteries are intricate, but the long-term damage and growth for Thomas and Barbara is what makes you commit to 20+ books.

I'm gonna be the dissenting voice on a popular one: the 'Women's Murder Club' by James Patterson. It's long-running, sure. Tons of books on KU. But the detective arc? It feels stagnant after a while. Lindsay Boxer faces a personal crisis, solves the case, rinse and repeat. The supporting cast gets shuffled, but there's no real sense of lasting progression or consequence.

If you want pure, fast-paced procedural quantity, it's here. But if you're looking for deep, evolving character development across a series, this might leave you feeling like you're on a treadmill instead of a journey.

What are the best Kindle Unlimited fiction books for mystery lovers?

For a real deep cut, try searching ‘locked room mystery’ or ‘impossible crime’ directly. It’s a niche within a niche, dedicated to the most intricate puzzles. The solutions are often brilliantly convoluted, involving hidden passages, psychological trickery, or elaborate mechanical contraptions. They’re less about realistic police work and more about the sheer joy of a seemingly unsolvable problem. Authors who write these are often fans of the Golden Age of detective fiction and are keeping a very specific tradition alive. They’re not for everyone, but for puzzle purists, they’re a delight.
