If you're a student or on a tight budget, the library route through OverDrive/Libby is the absolute best. Zero cost, completely legal, and it supports your local library's funding when they see high usage stats for these titles. You might have to place a hold if all copies are checked out, but that's just like a physical library.
I've introduced several friends to light novels this way. They'd never spend money on a genre they were unsure about, but borrowing the first volume of 'Shield Hero' got them hooked. Then they started buying later volumes to support the series. It's a great gateway.

For ultimate flexibility, buying the DRM-free EPUB directly from J-Novel Club is the way to go. You can then read it in any app you like—Google Play Books, Apple Books, KOReader on a Kobo, etc. You truly own the file and aren't tied to a specific company's ecosystem.
It's a slightly more technical route, as you have to download the file and potentially sideload it to your device, but it's empowering. You're not at the mercy of a store closing or losing your account. For a series you truly love and want to archive forever, this is the most robust legal method.

I prefer BookWalker mainly for the points system. You earn points on every purchase, which translate to discounts on future ones. They also have super sales focused on specific genres or publishers, where light novels can go for 50% off or more.
It adds up if you read a lot in this niche. The app is designed for this content, with easy navigation to the next chapter and good handling of illustrations. The DRM is a downside, but for a dedicated reader app that I only use for these kinds of books, I've accepted it for the benefits and frequent sales.

If you have a library card, see if your library uses Hoopla or OverDrive. Mine does, and I was shocked to find several volumes of 'The Rising of the Shield Hero' available to borrow for free. The selection depends on what your specific library has purchased, so it's not guaranteed.
But if they have it, it's a fantastic zero-cost, completely legal option. The loan period is usually 21 days, which is plenty of time to read a light novel volume. It's my first stop for any series now before I decide to buy.

However, as always, reality had its cruel ways of disappointing him. His parents died shortly after his birth in a war to save humanity, subjecting him to the life of an orphan. All the people vying for the throne turned against him, looking for any and all opportunities to kill him, the last living heir to the throne. Fortunately, he had his aunt, his last living family, who helped protect him by becoming the acting queen but this came with the price of being holed up in his palace till his ‘awakening’ which would enable him to defend himself and survive in this cruel world…

But...that's when the future revoked overlord is born.
"Master, do you miss this apprentice?"
Lips painted in bright red ticked up in a sharp smile. Her eyes were a pool of dark red, like a swirl of the finest wine. One jaded hand in his throat, nails slightly digging in the skin there, the other was on his cheek carefully caressing.
The clashing of both gestures were confusing, but Rion's mind only provided one instinctual response; to run away as far as possible.

Honestly, Google Play Books is a decent option if you're already in the Android ecosystem. The reading experience is smooth, and your progress syncs across devices. I read the first few volumes there during commutes. The pricing is standard, but they do offer sample chapters for free, which is helpful to check out the translation style before committing any money.
I got hooked on 'The Rising of the Shield Hero' because the story grabs you from the first volume, so my simplest advice is to read the light novels in publication order — start at Volume 1 and work forward. The main series is where the core plot and character growth live, and reading them sequentially keeps the pacing and revelations intact. If you’ve seen the anime, figure out which volume the season ended on and pick up the next volume to avoid repeating content.
There are also short story collections and special volumes floating around (prequels, side tales, and bonus chapters). My rule of thumb is to tuck those in after finishing the main volume they reference — they’re best enjoyed as extras that deepen character moments rather than essential plot drivers. Authors’ notes and afterwords can be delightful, too; I always skim them for little behind-the-scenes bits.
If you like comparisons, the web novel sometimes diverges from the published light novels, so that’s optional reading for completists. For English readers, grab officially translated volumes when you can; the quality and formatting make a big difference when you’re invested in the world. Enjoy the ride and savor the quieter chapters — they often hit hardest for me.
finding legal sources is crucial to support the creators. The easiest way is through official platforms like BookWalker or Amazon Kindle, where you can purchase digital copies of the light novels. These sites often have the latest volumes available shortly after release in Japan, sometimes even with official translations. For the manga adaptation, check out platforms like ComiXology or Kobo, which frequently partner with publishers to offer legal downloads.
If you prefer physical copies, retailers like Right Stuf Anime or Barnes & Noble stock imported and translated versions. Some local comic shops might carry it too, especially if they specialize in manga. For the anime adaptation of the original series, Crunchyroll and Funimation are go-tos, though 'Re Rise' might follow similar distribution paths. Always double-check the publisher’s website for region-specific availability, as licensing can vary.
The Rising of the Shield Hero' manga is one of those series that hooked me from the first chapter. If you're looking for official sources, I'd recommend checking out platforms like Crunchyroll Manga or Kadokawa's BookWalker. They often have the latest chapters available for purchase or subscription. I personally prefer BookWalker because they sometimes offer bonus content like author notes or exclusive illustrations.
For physical copies, local comic shops or big retailers like Barnes & Noble usually carry the volumes. If you're into digital, Kindle and ComiXology are solid options too. Just a heads-up—avoid sketchy sites offering free reads; they often have poor translations or malware risks. The art in this series deserves to be seen in high quality, especially those epic battle scenes!
