Hope is handled differently. Even the darkest Gothic tale usually permitted a sliver of hope, if only for the survival of one soul to tell the tale. A lot of praised modern horror is utterly hopeless, embracing cosmic indifference or active malice. The victory isn't escape or understanding; it's sometimes just the momentary delay of the inevitable.
I feel like Gothic horror was more about the fear of what's out there in the dark, beyond the candlelight. Modern horror is often about the fear of what's already inside, what you brought home with you, what's growing inside your own body or mind. The frontier of fear moved from the external wilderness to the internal self.
A huge shift is in the source of authority. In Gothic works, there was often a rational, scholarly voice trying to catalogue or explain the supernatural, even as it overwhelmed them. Now, that authority is frequently absent or proven utterly useless. The horror is acknowledged as incomprehensible from the start. The story isn't about solving the mystery; it's about surviving the pervasive, unexplainable wrongness.
The pacing of revelation is technically constrained by the short form, but also culturally accelerated. Gothic readers had patience for slow burns. Modern readers, conditioned by quick cuts and instant gratification, demand a faster payoff. The horror has to establish itself and land its blow quickly, which favors high-concept, idea-driven stories over slow-burning atmosphere (though the masters can still blend both).
Lurking. I've read a bunch of Gothic stuff for a course, but I'm way more into modern indie horror games. The jump from text-based dread to interactive fear is a whole other conversation. Might dip out to find a thread on that, but curious what folks here say about the literary shift.

The fear should feel earned, not gratuitous. Horror for horror's sake can feel cheap and exploitative. In a great story, the scary moments arise organically from the characters, the setting, and the plot. The violence or the grotesque imagery serves a purpose beyond shock—it reveals character, advances the theme, or represents a moral or psychological rupture.
When a character suffers, it should affect the reader because we understand who they are and why this matters. When something monstrous appears, it should feel like a culmination of the story's internal logic, not a random insertion. This narrative integrity makes the horror meaningful. It transforms it from a simple sensation into a thematic statement, which is far more potent and memorable.
Folk horror's revival owes a lot to short stories. M.R. James's stories are often rooted in antiquarian discoveries and rural folklore. That slow-burn, academic uncovering of a pagan, earthy terror is the blueprint for films like 'The Wicker Man' and 'The Witch'. The short story form, with its limited scope, is ideal for presenting a single, chilling folk ritual or superstition without needing a full mythological world built around it. It's a glimpse into a darker world, which is often scarier than a full tour.
Forget the content for a sec—the biggest difference is how you find them. Classic collections were often curated by a single author and published as a 'complete works' volume you'd find in a used bookstore. Modern ones are everywhere: themed Kindle anthologies, indie publisher Kickstarters, horror magazine annuals. The barrier to entry is lower, so the variety is wild, but you also have to sift through more to find the gems. The classics have the weight of time filtering out the mediocre for you.
A subtle but powerful theme is 'stagnation' or 'entrapment in time.' Not a ghost repeating an action, but a person or place caught in a loop of decay without release. The horror is in the endless, unchanging misery. Some of M.R. James's antiquarians discover places or objects that exude this feeling—a slow, eternal wrongness. It's the opposite of a quick fright; it's a desolate, hopeless atmosphere that promises no climax, no escape, just an everlasting, quiet dread. That theme resonates because it mirrors our deepest fears about mortality and meaninglessness.
