Are There Any Nora Roberts Novellas Available As Free Online Reads?
After finding a few short Nora Roberts romance ebooks on random sites, are any actually legal free reads from official sources like Amazon First Reads or her publisher's promotions?
You know, I read a blog post once where a reader wrote to Roberts' publisher asking about this very thing. The response was a polite form letter directing them to retailers and libraries. That pretty much sums up the official stance.

I see a lot of correct 'library' answers, but also consider podcast apps. Some audio drama podcasts produce romance novellas, though not by Nora Roberts. It won't help your specific request, but if the core desire is a free, serialized romantic audio story, that ecosystem exists.
For Nora Roberts specifically, the path remains the library audiobook. But exploring other legal, free fiction podcasts might scratch a similar itch while you're on the waitlist for her anthologies. It's a different medium, but the storytelling fundamentals are the same.

Imagine walking into a bakery and asking for a free cupcake from their best-selling batch. That's what this question feels like. The library is like having a friend who bought the cupcake and is willing to share it with you. Go make friends with your library's digital portal.

I actually found 'Once Upon a Dream' in a compilation on my library's cloudLibrary app. It took some digging, but it was there. So, not 'free online' in the wild, but free via a legitimate lending service. Took a two-week wait, but it was worth it. That's the kind of route you have to take.

The publishing industry's shift to digital has locked down content more tightly, not loosened it. Unauthorized sharing is easier to track, and publishers are aggressive about sending takedowns. So, the wild west of free author websites hosting stories is largely over for big names.
For Nora Roberts, her shorter works are assets used to sell collections. The 'free' model doesn't align with that strategy. It's more productive to think of her novellas as bonus content within a paid product. Appreciating them in that context might make paying for the anthology (or borrowing it) feel more worthwhile, knowing you're also getting stories from other fantastic writers in the bargain.

This book is a compilation of exciting erotica short stories which includes forbidden romance, dominating & Submissive romance, erotic romance and taboo romance, with cliffhangers.
Unlike my other book “sinful Desires”, This book is a novella and has much longer chapters and lengthy storylines.
This Erotic collection is loaded with hot, graphic sex! It is intended only for adults over the age of 18 and all characters are represented as 18 or over.
Read, Enjoy, and tell me your favorite story.

Warning: This collection contains explicit adult content, including intense power dynamics, dominance/submission, dubious consent themes in fantasy context, BDSM elements, age-gap scenarios, breeding kink, group play undertones, and graphic sexual situations. All stories feature consenting adults in fictional scenarios.
In this scorching anthology, eight ruthless, ultra-wealthy billionaires each claim total ownership over the woman who enters their world—whether through debt, auction, obsession, or sheer predatory desire. Every novella stands alone, delivering a different flavor of erotic heat while threading the addictive "owned by the billionaire" fantasy throughout. Dive into whichever kink calls to you... or devour them all.
This might sound obvious, but have you checked if any of her novellas are included with a subscription service like Kindle Unlimited? It's not free, but if you already have a subscription for other reasons, it's effectively free for you. They have a rotating selection of her work, especially the ones published under her J.D. Robb pen name or older category romances. It's worth a quick search within the KU catalog before you go hunting on the wild web.
A friend told me about Archive.org having some old books, so I checked for Nora Roberts. They have a few physical books you can 'borrow' for an hour via digital scan, but it's a clunky, archaic system meant for research, not leisure reading. And her popular novella collections aren't there.
It's not a viable source. The interface is terrible for reading a romance novella on a phone or tablet. It solidified my belief that for modern, popular fiction, the dedicated library apps are the only game in town for free access. They're designed for the reading experience we expect today.
Stick to platforms built for readers, not digital archives built for preservation. The user experience is part of the value you're getting for 'free.'
I'm curious about the psychology behind the question. Is it a trial, to see if you like her style before committing to a long book? If so, those first-chapter samples on Amazon or Apple Books are perfect for that. They're free, legal, and give you a true taste of her prose and pacing.
Or is it a time constraint? Audiobooks at 1.5x speed while commuting could be the answer. The desire for a 'short story' might be masking a different need—sampling or time-efficient consumption—that has other solutions.
Why not try her J.D. Robb 'In Death' series through the library? It's not classic pure romance, but it's Roberts writing futuristic romantic suspense. The early books are now classics in their own right! Availability for that series on Libby is often great because libraries buy huge collections. It gives you a feel for her character and relationship writing within a detective framework. If you enjoy that, you'll likely enjoy her straight romance novels and won't mind putting in a hold request or buying a copy. Sometimes branching into an author's adjacent series is the best way to discover them without upfront cost.
Her J.D. Robb 'In Death' series follows the same rule. All those futuristic crime romances have samples on major ebook platforms. I often download the sample for the next book in that series right after finishing one, so it's ready to go when I'm in the mood. The samples are a great reminder of Eve Dallas's voice and the dynamic with Roarke. They're perfect for deciding if you want to continue investing in such a long series. Honestly, I've bought more books because of those samples than any advertisement. They hook you right back into that world.
I've got nothing to add on the free front, but can we talk about how underrated her short stories are? They're these perfect little capsules of character and mood. Sometimes I even prefer them to her longer novels because there's no subplot sprawl. Just a tight, satisfying emotional arc. Wish they were collected in a more accessible way.
Library. Library. Library. It's the magic word. Free, legal, and you support a public institution. If they don't have the digital copy, request it! Libraries purchase based on patron requests. You might get it for yourself and for others in your community.
