I see this question pop up on Goodreads every few months. The collective wisdom of the crowd always arrives at the same answers. It's almost comforting in its consistency. No magical free repository has been discovered in all these years. The options are stable: borrow, buy, sample, or wait for a promo.

I'm curious about the psychology behind the question. Is it a trial, to see if you like her style before committing to a long book? If so, those first-chapter samples on Amazon or Apple Books are perfect for that. They're free, legal, and give you a true taste of her prose and pacing.
Or is it a time constraint? Audiobooks at 1.5x speed while commuting could be the answer. The desire for a 'short story' might be masking a different need—sampling or time-efficient consumption—that has other solutions.

It's a testament to her popularity that people are so eager to find even her minor works for free. The demand is there. You'd think a savvy publisher would bundle them into a low-cost ebook volume. 'The Collected Short Stories of Nora Roberts' for $4.99. I'd buy it in a heartbeat, and I suspect thousands of others would too. It feels like leaving money on the table.

Has her publisher ever done a 'Free Fridays' type promotion for her backlist? I feel like I saw one of her J.D. Robb books free once. Maybe the short stories are included in those sales occasionally? It's worth browsing the Kindle Top 100 Free in Romance every few weeks; you never know what might pop up.

Honestly, after reading through all these comments, I'm just going to buy the darn anthology. It's like, six bucks on Kindle. I spend more than that on a mediocre lunch. Supporting authors I love so they keep writing is worth a latte's worth of money.

> ️ Warning: This collection is sinfully explicit. Just glancing will make you squirm. If you can’t handle moans, ropes, or hands where they shouldn’t be turn back now.
You’ve been warned.
They say it’s just fiction... but these stories burn too real.
Every page drips with lust, danger, and forbidden desire.
There are no love stories here, only raw need, untamed passion, and the kind of encounters that leave your pulse racing and your body aching for more.
Inside these pages, you’ll find hotel hookups, forbidden age gaps, dominant bosses, naughty students with teachers, moaning nurses, lesbians, stepfathers who cross the line, and desperate daughters who let them and vice versa. From BDSM dungeons to office desks, from late-night threesomes to risky public play... no fantasy is off-limits.
Midnight Pleasures is a no-limits collection of erotic short stories meant to tease, tempt, and utterly satisfy. Quick hits. Slow burns. Rough rides. Dangerous desires. Even the ones you’ve never admitted out loud.

The digital shelf on her official site is for display only. You can look, but you can't take. To take, you have to go to a digital retailer. That's the fundamental design. So while the site is 'official,' it's not a source of content; it's a source of information about the content, which resides elsewhere.
Library. Library. Library. It's the magic word. Free, legal, and you support a public institution. If they don't have the digital copy, request it! Libraries purchase based on patron requests. You might get it for yourself and for others in your community.
I see a lot of correct 'library' answers, but also consider podcast apps. Some audio drama podcasts produce romance novellas, though not by Nora Roberts. It won't help your specific request, but if the core desire is a free, serialized romantic audio story, that ecosystem exists.
For Nora Roberts specifically, the path remains the library audiobook. But exploring other legal, free fiction podcasts might scratch a similar itch while you're on the waitlist for her anthologies. It's a different medium, but the storytelling fundamentals are the same.
From a publishing standpoint, it makes sense why there isn't a free repository. Short stories in romance are often used as loss leaders or bundled to add value to anthologies. Your best strategy is to follow the money, but in reverse: look where the publisher is investing in promotion. That means checking the 'Featured Free' rack on mainstream eBook stores. Kobo's 'Free eBooks' section is particularly good for romance. Also, the website Freebooksy has a romance category; Nora Roberts titles appear there when they're on promo. It's a curated list, so you avoid the spammy pirate sites.
Her J.D. Robb 'In Death' series follows the same rule. All those futuristic crime romances have samples on major ebook platforms. I often download the sample for the next book in that series right after finishing one, so it's ready to go when I'm in the mood. The samples are a great reminder of Eve Dallas's voice and the dynamic with Roarke. They're perfect for deciding if you want to continue investing in such a long series. Honestly, I've bought more books because of those samples than any advertisement. They hook you right back into that world.
Why not try her J.D. Robb 'In Death' series through the library? It's not classic pure romance, but it's Roberts writing futuristic romantic suspense. The early books are now classics in their own right! Availability for that series on Libby is often great because libraries buy huge collections. It gives you a feel for her character and relationship writing within a detective framework. If you enjoy that, you'll likely enjoy her straight romance novels and won't mind putting in a hold request or buying a copy. Sometimes branching into an author's adjacent series is the best way to discover them without upfront cost.
