In What Order Should I Read The My Hero Academia Manga Books?

As a new fan, can someone map the full series reading order, including spin-offs like Vigilantes, for a smooth My Hero Academia storyline?

I disagree with the notion that the spin-offs are unimportant. 'Vigilantes' provides crucial context for the Pro Hero world that the main series glosses over because it's focused on students.

Understanding the daily grind, the public's fickleness, and the legal limitations of hero work from 'Vigilantes' makes the main series' conflicts, like the public's turn against heroes, hit much harder. I'd read it after the 'Pro Hero' arc in the main story, but before the 'Paranormal Liberation War.' It's a perfect narrative interlude.

My dog chewed up my copy of Volume 9. Now my ordered collection has a gaping hole.

It's physically painful to look at on the shelf. The order is broken! This is a first-world problem of the highest order, but it truly bothers me. I need to replace it to restore the sacred sequence. The integrity of the narrative depends on it!

A friend of mine read it completely backwards by accident, thinking the higher numbers were earlier. He was so confused. He thought Deku started out as this angry, isolated powerhouse and slowly became a crybaby who kept breaking his arms.

It was the funniest, most nonsensical interpretation of a story I've ever heard. It just goes to show that the order isn't just a suggestion—it's the entire framework of the narrative. The numbers are there for a very good reason.

Why overcomplicate it? The release order is the intended order. Volumes 1 through however many are out now.

Shonen Jump serializes it weekly, and the volumes collect those chapters in order. Start at the beginning and move forward. The only tricky part is if you're trying to jump in after a certain arc from the anime, but even then, I'd suggest reading from the start because the manga has little details and pacing differences that are worth experiencing.

I wonder if Horikoshi has ever commented on the reading order. Probably not, because it's so obvious.

But I'd love to know if he ever considered telling the story a different way—maybe starting with the final battle and flashing back. The fact that he chose the classic, chronological 'zero to hero' path speaks volumes. He trusted the journey itself to be compelling, not just the destination. The order is a statement of that trust.
