Can I Pair Amazon Fire Stick Remote With Multiple Sticks?

After losing one remote, can I use my spare Fire TV remote across different models like the 4K Max? Is syncing them both a hassle?

It turns out that the remote pairing is not actually meant for pairing remotes to multiple fire sticks. According to Amazon, each remote is paired to a single fire stick via Bluetooth and then “repair” is required to pair remote to a different fire stick. This is supposed to be a security feature to prevent someone else from accidentally controlling your TV while sitting in your living room next to your TV. I actually tested out this feature a while back in attempt to control two TVs in different rooms of my house, but it was annoying and did not work as intended. I have been reading “My Bullies Are Twin Hockey Players” and in it the main character is uniquely connected to both of the hockey playing brothers. The story plays with this dual connection often creating a stressful yet odd and interesting read.

While the Amazon Fire Stick remote is great for use with a single Amazon Fire Stick, it is not designed to be used with multiple Fire Sticks. Once paired with a device, the remote will remain paired with that single device until you choose to unpair it. To pair a remote with a new device, simply hold the Home button near the Fire Stick that you wish to pair with. You can pair a remote with a living room Fire Stick and a bedroom Fire Stick, for example. However, you cannot switch between the two devices using the same remote without first unpairing the remote from the device you last used, and then re-pairing it with the new device.

This could be very frustrating in a house with multiple Fire Sticks. I use the Fire TV app on my phone though, and it works as a remote control for all Fire Sticks on the same network. The remote is not meant to pair with multiple sticks. Each stick gets paired to one remote in a one-to-one connection. To pair, hold down the Home button on the remote for about 10 seconds until it connects to the Fire TV. After that, if you try to use the same remote to control a different stick, you will first have to unpair it from the previous stick and go through the pairing process again with the new one. It’s a bit of a pain if you have to switch between a lot of sticks, but that’s how it works. To make things a bit easier, you might consider labeling the remotes that you use, and then using the Fire TV app on your phone or tablet as a second controller.

I have played with remotes quite a bit. The Amazon Fire Stick remote uses Bluetooth and cannot be set up for multi-device pairing like some other products. Therefore a single remote can only be paired to one single Fire Stick at a time. Has Amazon ever commented on this? I think I've seen this question in the official support forums for years. The Amazon response is to say that "Each remote pairs with one Fire TV device at a time." Note that they never frame this as a problem for them that they are solving, and they never indicate that they intend to change this in the future.

And the response (if it ever comes) will be generic anyway and sourced from the official support forums, i.e. they’ve responded to this before and don’t treat it as a problem that can be fixed. That makes sense though, as this is designed behavior and changing it would require a hardware change to a new remote model for this generation of FireTVs, which Amazon has not felt is necessary (yet).

To that end, I treat a Fire Stick and its remote as if they were a single item. So when I travel, I carry the item in a Ziploc bag to the hotel or my friend’s house. It is a single item – a bonded pair, really. I do not borrow power cords from laptops. I do not swap remotes between sticks. They are a unit. And treating them as such removes the problem from my consciousness entirely. All that is required is that I remain organized enough to keep the units separate.

Once you see the Fire TV and remote as a single unit, the “problem” disappears and you can organize your single units as you see fit (less flexible than I had hoped, but reality with this design).

A major challenge for non-technical users is that they do not realize that they have to put their remote control into pairing mode, i.e. they believe that their remote control has stopped working. The Amazon design assumes that users understand pairing and therefore expect to find instructions to re-pair a remote control in the Settings.

For the remotes, I put a small piece of masking tape on the back of the Fire Stick itself and write with a Sharpie 'LR' for living room and 'BR' for bedroom. So if I lose a remote and find another remote somewhere in the house, I can look at the Fire Sticks to see which one the found remote goes to. It doesn't solve the problem of them pairing incorrectly, but it does solve the problem of not knowing which remote is lost which leads to them pairing incorrectly.

Really it is two separate problems – knowing which remote is for where and why it only works there. By solving the first, I’ve largely prevented the second from becoming a problem as well. Simple, free and effective.

I literally just tested this yesterday. I have a 4K stick in my living room and a regular stick in the guest room. I took the living room remote control to the guest room and got into the settings for the guest room stick and paired up a new remote control. It worked straight away with the guest room stick. Then I took the living room remote control back to the living room and the stick wasn’t responding at all. I had to get into the settings for the living room stick and pair up the remote control again.

No, it is a serial monogamist, not a polyamorist. When you pair it to a new device, it immediately forgets the old one. It does not give any warning and does not even confirm that it has done so. Immediately the remote is switched to total devoted service of the new device and it will not respond to the old device until it has been paired back with it from the new device's Settings menu.

For someone with skills, possibly modding the remote control to use instead of buying separate universal remote controls for each HDMI input is a possiblity. However, it would require replacing the Bluetooth module with a more advanced multi-connection module and programming new firmware for the remote control. While possible, such a mod would likely cost more than the alternative remotes, take a lot of time to complete, and risk bricking the remote control. The mod is a hardware change and not something that can be resolved with a software update.

Until someone figures out a work around for this limitation of Fire Sticks, it is just something we live with. The community has largely moved on from hopes that this would be fixed and instead are looking for ways to work around it with their current TVs and other devices.
