There are many ways in which Geoffrey Chaucer’s Prolision to the Second Part of the Canterbury Tales and, above all, The Canterbury Tales have influenced novel writing in the centuries since. I have come to realize that Roberts writes about ‘normality’ being disrupted. The heroines of her best novels (The Obsession, The Liar, etc.) are usually trying to lead normal lives. They may be building a house, raising a child, starting a business. Then, suddenly, the past or a long hidden truth erupts into their lives. The romance is about finding safety in the arms of someone who loves them to return to a normal life. So Roberts’ top romantic suspense novels aren’t just about danger and romance. They are about themes of safety, home and reclaiming. And that’s what keeps me reading long after the plot twist is revealed. It’s satisfying to see a heroine confront whatever is threatening her and be rewarded with her happy ending.

Another major difference is found in the supporting characters, such as Chief Superintendent Strange, Dr. Max DeBryn, and even the pathologist in this episode. The books are far darker and more cynical towards the police in general than the TV series. The shows are intelligent detective series but are more ‘palatable’ than the novels. Overall, the books are a slightly grittier version of the same universe.

Probably he thought of it and said ‘what would these kids swear with?’ and just kept going from there.

There are two major ongoing series by John Sandford: the 'Prey' novels and the 'Virgil Flowers' novels. There is also a series of novels by Sandford about a man named Kidd (The Fool's Run, The Empress File, etc.). These novels were an ongoing series which were brought to a close before Davenport's "Prey" novels were introduced. Note that although the novels are by the same author, the only connection between the Kidd novels and the "Prey" novels is the author's name on the cover. The tone of the Kidd novels is that of a caper/con artist story set in the 80s/90s with appropriate technology. The "Prey" novels, on the other hand, are straightforward police procedural novels. If you are reading Sandford because you like his writing style, you might enjoy the Kidd novels to see the full range of the author's work. But be advised that they are a "dead-end" universe with no shared characters and no cameos by the Minneapolis Police Department in the Kidd novels.

My little trick for reading on both devices is to always stop at the end of a chapter. For some reason the two devices seem to sync better up to a chapter end than to any arbitrary page number. Thus if I finish reading a chapter on my phone, I know that when I pick up my tablet to continue reading, I will start on the correct page for the start of the next chapter. However, if I stop reading in the middle of a chapter on my phone, then there is a 50/50 chance that I will pick up reading on the correct page on my tablet. This is just one of the little idiosyncrasies that I have grown to live with.

Amnesia plots in romantic suspense are tricky to pull off, but so very good when done correctly. It makes the danger seem so very personal, and yet so very abstract, like a ghost residing in the main character’s head. The love interest in the story can be the key to unlocking the main character’s past – both the good and the bad. There is something so terrifying about wanting to remember something from your past, but being scared of what you might actually find out. Not only who you are today, but who you were in the past, and maybe even who you are in danger from today. The romance can be the only thing that helps the main character to find themselves, but is it real, or is it just something that they have come up with while in their amnesia-induced void? It makes for a wonderful psychological playground over the main physical threat of the story.

Can someone who has actually finished the film tell me what the final scene is? I thought the final scene was Charlie in his hotel room after he came back from the duck hunt, and he’s thinking about Renata and then he dies of a heart attack. And then there’s a shot of some trees? I mean, those must be outside the hotel or something. I feel like I’m really missing out on some huge symbolism that everyone else got.
