Archive of Our Own is far and away the top hub for Zelda fanfiction these days, and it’s not really close. The tagging system is a godsend for a fandom with so many potential eras and pairings—you can filter for 'Breath of the Wild' or 'Time Travel' or 'Zelda & Link Friendship' without wading through tons of unrelated stuff. The culture there skews toward more polished, often novel-length works and a lot of popular authors migrated over from FF.net years ago.
That said, FanFiction.net still has a massive, deep archive, especially for older game eras like 'Ocarina of Time' or 'Twilight Princess.' The search is clunky, but if you’re hunting for a specific classic fic from 2005, it’s probably still there. Tumblr and Twitter host a ton of micro-fics, headcanons, and AU threads that never get archived elsewhere, which is where a lot of the current fandom energy lives, even if it’s harder to track.
AO3 dominates for a reason. The tagging and filtering is superior, the culture encourages creative freedom, and most of the big-name authors post there. FF.net feels like a ghost town for new stuff, though its old library is vast. Don’t sleep on Tumblr for those in-the-moment, raw ideas that later become full fics.
Honestly, the platform depends entirely on what you’re looking for. For serious, lengthy novelizations or intricate ship dynamics, AO3 is your best resource—the kudos system surfaces the most beloved works reliably. For a massive, if messy, historical archive covering two decades of fandom, FF.net can’t be ignored. And for real-time, conversational fandom where a snippet about Skyward Sword’s Zelda can spark a dozen threadfics in an hour, you have to be on Tumblr. Each serves a different need, and most avid readers I know check at least two.
I mostly browse on AO3, but I’ve noticed a weirdly active pocket for Zelda fic on Quotev? It’s mostly younger writers, I think, and the content leans toward reader-inserts and high school AUs that you don’t see as much elsewhere. The quality is super hit-or-miss, but sometimes you stumble on a fun, unserious take you wouldn’t find in the more curated archives. Wattpad has some too, but the tagging is so chaotic it feels like digging through a bin without a label.

I’ve spent way too many hours digging for Link/Zelda stories, and honestly, it depends what you’re after. Archive of Our Own is the titan—massive archive, incredibly detailed tagging, and the quality of writing can be shockingly good. You can filter for everything from the classic 'Hero of Time' era to 'Tears of the Kingdom' AUs. The downside is the sheer volume; sometimes you have to wade through a lot to find stories that click with your particular ship.
FanFiction.net still has a huge, older backlog, especially for games like 'Ocarina of Time' and 'Twilight Princess'. The interface feels dated, but there are some absolute classics there from the mid-2000s that you won’t find anywhere else. Tumblr and Discord servers are where the real-time fandom lives, though. That’s where you find the niche headcanons, the chaotic screenshot fics, and the writers who are actively posting WIPs and taking prompts. I found my favourite Sidon/Link modern AU through a Discord rec channel.
Man, the idea of 'exclusive' Zelda fanfiction isn't something I've really bumped into, at least not on a single platform. Most writers post their crossover adventures wherever they have an audience, you know? You'll find the deep cuts scattered all over. I got absolutely hooked on a 'Zelda'/'Fullmetal Alchemist' fusion on Archive of Our Own a while back, where Link's Sheikah Slate tech clashed with alchemical principles. The author only posted it there, so I guess that makes it exclusive to AO3 by default.
Honestly, the more niche the crossover, the more likely it'll be a lone wolf project living on one site. Forums like SpaceBattles or Sufficient Velocity sometimes host unique, in-progress stories you won't find elsewhere, often with a heavier focus on world-building logic than romance. That's where I stumbled upon a wild 'Legend of Zelda' meets 'Dark Souls' saga, which was... brutal, but fascinating. So I'd say don't chase a platform for exclusives; chase the weird plot bunnies. The best ones tend to settle in one corner of the internet and dig in.
