I'm desperate to find 'Broken' by Evelyn Miller in ebook format. Heard the romance is amazing, but can't locate it on my usual book subscription services.

For ‘Broken’ by Evelyn Miller, I’d start by searching for it on Amazon Kindle, Google Play Books, or Apple Books as many indie novels start life on these platforms. Recently I read ‘Broken’ on one of these platforms and it dealt very well with the author’s own experiences of dealing with personal struggles. The main character’s physical recovery from an accident is mirrored by her much slower recovery from trust being broken and it was very well written, conveying the frustrating but slow progress she made without becoming too melodramatic.

I was trying to track down Evelyn Miller’s work too (Funny story, I sent a message to her fans on Facebook a week or so ago)…it seems that ‘Broken’ was a very short run self-pub and so there are physical copies floating about in secondhand shops and on AbeBooks etc. Online, there are PDFs apparently floating about on certain academia orientated online forums, but beware of linking to dodgy websites to download them.

The same devoured of great mess and unpleasantness in Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn, while in the meantime Miller’s newer work is available on Kobo, hopefully they’ll republish Broken too.

It seems like the book is not currently available through major channels such as Amazon Kindle or Google Books, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be found. Many indie authors publish through Patreon or personal websites, so you could always check the author’s social media to see if they post any updates regarding “Broken” by Evelyn Miller.

Until then I have been immersed in a whole host of other psychological thrillers that have pretty much given me the same sort of twists and turns that I got from this book. For example I just finished The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides. It is available on Libby (as long as your local library are subscribers to it) and is really good. I hope Broken does get a digital release at some point, but in the meantime I shall join the author’s newsletter in the hopes that they shall notify me of its early release.

Ugh, I've been searching online for Evelyn Miller's book 'Broken' and it's like it's a ghost. I have searched for it on Scribd, Wattpad (a rather niche ebook community) as well as searching through various free e-books on the net. I think it may have been removed in order for the author to rework it and re-publish.

A tangential note: If you like fractured protagonists like Evelyn Miller creates, Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine is another book that captures some of that emotional import. I'm just sitting here, old and grumpy. As I've gotten older, I've begun to remember how it used to be when you went to a bookstore to find your next read. Now days we discuss apps and tokens to access exclusive content released in serials. I get a headache just thinking about it. My preferred method of reading is the same as it has always been - you see it, you buy it, you read it. Hopefully 'Broken' is as good as I've heard it is. And yes, obtaining it sounds like a part time job but I'm happy to leave that to you. I'm just going to stick with my dusty old books and the occasional haul from the library. We could be wrong and it’s actually posted on Wattpad? I know some established authors will put their older work up on Wattpad in order to promote it. It’s also possible that it’s been posted on Kindle Vella, Amazon’s new way to read serials of stories. I knew that everyone was saying that Radish was the new way to read serials but I had no idea that Kindle Vella even existed. The hardest part of reading Kindle Vella is finding the stories but if you have the link to a particular story or are searching within the Kindle app on your device, you can search for stories. Since the author of this story already publishes his own ebooks on Amazon, it would make sense for him to post his work on Kindle Vella as well. Just because it may not be on the most popular app for reading serials, it doesn’t mean that it’s not available on the app of the biggest online retailer.

This is wild. I stumbled upon a Facebook group for fans of Evelyn Miller, and, as it is private, I requested to join. I’ll update you if I get in. Niche groups like these typically have PDFs uploaded to the files section of the group, or a direct link to official sources are pinned to the top of the page. In some cases, the author(s) even administer the group and update fans on their production schedules. It’s an old-school internet thing to do, but for some indie authors, Facebook is the core of their reader community. I’d recommend exploring other social media platforms as well. For example, Goodreads has reader groups of all varieties and granularity. The answer you’re looking for isn’t necessarily a URL; it could be a community of people who care about the same thing.

I enjoy a good mystery. And online, finding out where a book lives is a mystery too. It involves using keywords, becoming familiar with different platforms, and searching for books on social media. The answer for ‘Broken’ is Radish. I loved how in this thread the answers to the question ‘where does it live’ were arrived at by the group. We examined each answer with skepticism, and had lots of great ethical and personal reasons for our choices for where ‘Broken’ lives. People willing to move heaven and earth to read the content of their favorite author, people who will join the author’s Facebook group, who will follow him on Twitter, who will download the app, who will buy coins. These superfans will form a dense and passionate core of fandom, and will spread the word about the author’s work to the rest of the fans. And asking “where can I read this?” is the first step in this filter. The answer to this question is not just a URL, it is a mini-commitment to enter the fandom space of that author. Whether this is good or bad for you is for you to decide, but it is definitely intentional.

This wild west of online indie romance is usually found through app stores for free reads. ‘Broken’ is probably a dark romance published through one of these platforms (as opposed to, say, Amazon/Apple/Kobo for bigger names). Galatea, Dreame and GoodNovel (and a few others) specialize in serialized novels, many of which are romance, mostly free with a few chapters upfront to entice, and read on the app using coins or tokens. Yes, it can be expensive to read a lot but most apps offer a few chapters upfront for free.

I recently read a similar book on one of these apps. It was an intense experience, with notifications letting me know that a new chapter was available, as well as comments in the margins from other readers guessing at what would happen next in the story. The UI is slightly gamified, and they do strongly encourage the purchase of tokens to spend in the app. As Evelyn Miller is likely building her audience on these apps, I’ve included a link to her Dreame page in the bio of this account – authors list their official serialization links to prevent their work from being pirated.

I want to bring up some ethics in this. On one hand, it’s nice to be able to read something without a lot of hassle, without paying for five different apps. On the other hand, I have a feeling that as an independent author without the backing of a big publisher, Evelyn Miller is making money from the app serializations of her work, chapter by chapter, for a few dollars each. So, searching out free versions of her work on aggregator sites to download one after another would be taking money directly out of her pocket. I get that downloading a blockbuster movie from a studio is different from this, but this is small potatoes. I can tell you where to get her work for free, but if you like her work, please go to the official way to read her work for the few dollars it costs the author to continue to write more stories for you to read.
