Why does the order matter so much? They're all standalone. I grabbed 'Strange Weather' at an airport because the cover looked cool and loved it. Then I went back and read 'Horns.'

Maybe I missed some subtle references or echoes, but it didn't harm my enjoyment. Sometimes I think fans overcomplicate this. Just read what's available at your library first.

Hill's publication order is pretty straightforward if you focus on novels and major collections.

Start with 'Heart-Shaped Box' in 2007, then move to '20th Century Ghosts,' which was his first story collection but published the same year.
The novel 'Horns' came out in 2010, followed by 'NOS4A2' in 2013.

His collaboration with his dad on 'The Fireman' happened in 2016, and 'Strange Weather' was the 2017 novella collection.
The latest novel is 'Full Throttle' from 2019, which mixes new and reprinted stories.
You can find a precise list on his publisher's website or Wikipedia to double-check.

It's wild to think 'Heart-Shaped Box' is almost 20 years old. Reading it now feels like a period piece of 2000s internet culture. Following the order is like a time capsule of recent horror history, which is a cool side benefit.

I love looking at an author's entire shelf in order. It feels like an accomplishment. With Hill, it's a manageable seven books (not counting comics). It's a satisfying, completable project for a year of reading.

Okay, practical tip: Search 'Joe Hill bibliography Wikipedia.' It's all laid out cleanly there with dates. Print it out, check off the books as you go.

Include the graphic novels if you want the full picture, but be prepared for a different medium. 'Locke & Key' is a massive commitment itself, started in 2008 and running for years. Maybe do prose books first, then circle back to comics if you're still hungry for his world-building.

Where should I start reading Joe Hill books in order?

I'm just sitting here, scrolling through all these detailed plans. Part of me thinks you should just walk into a bookstore, look at the covers and blurbs, and pick the one that gives you a chill. Sometimes over-planning the 'perfect order' takes the fun out of discovering an author organically.

What is the best Joe Hill book to start reading first?

The mythology in 'NOS4A2' is just so cool. The idea of 'inscapes'—these personal, powerful inner worlds that creative or obsessive people can access—is brilliantly original. It turns artists and maniacs into minor gods. It provides a framework that explains supernatural events in a way that feels both magical and logical. As a starting book, it introduces this beautiful, terrifying concept that feels fresh in a genre that can sometimes rely on tired tropes. You get the sense that Hill is building a new mythology from the ground up, and getting in on the ground floor of that is exciting.
