Duma Key' is a sleeper hit. An older man, recovering from a terrible accident, moves to a Florida key and takes up painting. His paintings start to... change things. It's a slow, beautiful, eerie story about artistic creation as a conduit for something otherworldly, and about friendship later in life.

The setting is vibrant, the characters are wonderfully drawn, and the horror creeps in at the edges of this sun-drenched paradise. It's not as famous as his Maine stories, but it's one of his best late-career novels. It shows a mastery of mood and a different kind of fear.

Ultimately, there is no single right answer. His career is too long, his range too wide. A recommendation is just handing someone a key to a specific door in a vast, creepy, wonderful mansion. The best you can do is listen to what they like in other stories and point them to the door that seems to fit their key. They might just wander through the whole place after that.

I'm going to be the contrarian and say avoid 'It' and 'The Stand' as first reads, even though people love them. They're massive, have huge casts, and their endings are... divisive, to put it mildly. That's a big investment for a new reader. If you bounce off them, you might write off King entirely, and that would be a shame.

Start with something mid-length where his narrative control is tight. Save the epic journeys for when you're already a fan and are willing to forgive some meandering or a quirky ending for the sake of the incredible journey.

Don't overlook 'The Green Mile'. It was published serially, so the chapters are tight and end on little hooks. It's a prison story with a supernatural element, and it's deeply moving. The emotional payoff is huge, and it's another example of King transcending genre. It's not scary in a traditional sense, but it's unforgettable.

For a pure, unadulterated blast of classic King horror, it's hard to beat 'Christine'. Sentient, evil car? Check. 1950s nostalgia as a corrupting force? Check. A slow takeover of the protagonist's best friend? Check. It's straightforward, viciously fun, and doesn't get bogged down. It's also a great look at his themes of addiction and obsession, wrapped in a greasy, motor-oil-scented package. If you want a pulpy, addictive page-turner that embodies his 80s era, start your engines here.
