Their dialogue is the strongest part of their characterization. Jiang Zhe and the dragon are so like a married couple (and also walking disaster) – their back-and-forth is both hilarious and poignant. Initially, Su Xue speaks in formal, dutiful tones but you can slowly sense dry humor and growing vulnerability beneath. It’s all revealed through their natural conversation as opposed to info dumping. The author does a great job of constructing distinct voices that clash wonderfully.

For me, finding free books is half the fun. I follow various hashtags such as #DragonRomance and #FreeBook on Twitter (or X as it’s now called), and in addition to many indie authors posting information about their e-books on their own websites, there are often free download days on Amazon e-books. All of these e-books are fully complete and have been edited professionally – even if they are only free for a limited time. BookBub is another service that can inform you of various free e-books, and I have alerts set up for ‘Fantasy Romance’ and ‘Free’ deals. With great patience, I have been able to build up a large digital library of dragon shifter e-books.

Wait, is this the anime with the girl and her diary that I saw a clip from on TikTok? That looked really sad. I’m having trouble keeping track of where you can watch full length anime movies these days. Everything seems so spread out.

Oh, interesting. I haven’t seen that series yet. Is it a recent project of theirs? The stuff I’ve seen so far is from a few years ago. I might have to get lost in some old goodness at some point to see how far they’ve developed their style and storytelling.

I searched for ‘Denying My Son’s Guilt’ on MyAsianTV, which I think is a bit subpar but free with a large library of flicks. Be prepared for lots of pop-up ads, although, I did find the movie to be a very emotional rollercoaster of feelings and the actors did an excellent job of portraying the characters and making the whole legal scenario feel very personal. You can search for it on the aforementioned site, provided you’re able to deal with all the advertising on the ad-ridden website.

Someone identify the movie? This thread could become a decent resource on specific titles, having a known peculiarity, eg being only available on the German Amazon Prime or even the uncut version only being included on a special edition Spanish Blu-ray. As a horror aficionado, I’m aware of where to find uncut versions of the 80s slashers. The French extremity films and classic old Hollywood noirs will likely have their own specialists. Sharing one’s knowledge is how we get around these types of restrictions.

You want to watch old vintage Godzilla movies? ‘Monster Wars Godzilla’ isn’t always the easiest to find but I have managed to get it on Vudu as a pay-to-rent title when Toho have it licensed. It’s also been great on the HD transfers making the old rubber suits look brilliant. Recently it was added to ‘Creature Features’ on Peacock and was great to see an old title like this up on the streaming service. Apparently NBCUniversal have some old distribution deals and it turns up from time to time, including this Halloween.
I also found out that my local indie theater was hosting virtual screenings of films like this as part of their “Kaiju Throwback” series. I ended up watching this on a screen near me and even participated in a live Q&A via Zoom with a historian of Japanese film. It really opened my eyes to the artistry of suitmation.

If you’re craving a dark comedy, then Don’t Let Her Know is the movie for you. This too-funny-for-words film is available for rent on Google Play Movies and Apple TV, and it’s even included for free on Pluto TV’s on-demand library as part of the ad-supported collection. Although I found the main plot pretty compelling on its own, I ended up watching this second to catch a lot of the wonderful background humor. I paired Don’t Let Her Know with I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore for a wonderful double feature—both are wildly chaotic and also somehow charmin’.

As previously noted, Blackwood Academy is a BritBox ‘International Mysteries’ title – not sure that’s the best category but it’s there. Hoopla (if your library subscribes) is another platform where it appears to be streaming – I managed to get hold of it on there last winter. Availability is a bit of a shambles at the moment, although there has been talk of a Blu-ray release from the show’s creators – no release date has been set yet though. Good luck finding it in the meantime.

For Chinese rom-coms, I’m a Viki girl. The Chinese rom-com “Too Late Mr Billionaire” is currently available to stream in High Definition on Viki and their mobile app for Smart TVs works wonderfully. Although “Too Late Mr Billionaire” may be geo-blocked in some regions, using a VPN (very quietly please) might just do the trick. This sugary sweet romantic comedy is best devoured with snacks of your choice!
