“He’s your husband.”
My husband, Jacob Montoya, pointed to his best friend and told me that the man was “my husband.”
Maximilian Gareth.
The man I had always known as Jacob’s closest friend simply approached me, took my hand, and said calmly, “Yes. I’m your husband.”
It all began with a harmless prank I had planned to play on Jacob for April Fools’ Day. After getting into an accident, I pretended to have lost my memory to see just how far my husband would take his act. But the joke ended up exposing his affair with my own best friend, Hazel.
Behind my back, Jacob had even called me boring and said I was no longer attractive.
I was hurt, but the longer I pretended to have amnesia, the harder it became to understand the man who now claimed to be my husband. Max stayed by my side, caring for me with a tenderness I had never received from Jacob.
But why was he so calm about accepting the lie? And what if the man who was supposed to be nothing more than part of my charade ended up dragging me into a far more dangerous game?
