He asks, “When’s your birthday, Elyria?” My lower lip pouts out as I think. At Crucible Academy, birthdays weren’t celebrated. Once a quarter, they would announce anyone who had a birthday and their new age. I shrug, “Sometime in the summer.” Beta Evans stares at me with his eyebrows crinkled together and asks, “You don’t know the date?” I shake my head no, “Crucible Academy didn’t tell us dates. One year should sound like plenty of time. One year is birthdays, holidays, terrible office team-building exercises, four dental reminders, and enough seasonal decorations to prove humans have always coped with mortality by buying themed napkins. I give myself away to my thoughts as my feet swing back and forth. I think about how things have suddenly changed. I had lived the past years having made peace with Roman never coming back.
