So this was a forbidden spot. Perfect for me.

She desperately sought another page, but there was no more. This book had kept her company for the past few hours. It's thick pages had become all her fingers could recognise during this brief period. Alas, all good things were meant to come to an end one day. In this case, in a few hours; for she had read a book of almost 400 pages in less than two hours!

There are a lot of rumours surrounding the secrecy of their younger years but the most agreed upon was that it was for their own safety. Our story truly begins on the sixteenth birthday of the Le Minuit twin’s birthday. The book was without a doubt the strangest thing I had ever read. The first ten chapters had been written like a textbook, detailing facts and supposition, quoting references and other supporting materials. Then at chapter 11 it started to read like a novel, a bedtime story of two girls that were forced into a position of power before they were ready, only to discover that they wielded power even they did not fully comprehend.

Novel's POV A soft tap landed on my shoulder, but I refused to budge. A few seconds later, light, feathered kisses brushed against my cheek, and despite my exhaustion, a small smile tugged at the corners of my lips. “Stop,” I murmured, keeping my eyes squeezed shut. “It’s morning, Novel. It’s time to go,” Alexei whispered against my ear. My eyes flew open instantly.

I focused on the cold air on my face and the unexpected warmth of the sun on my chest. The tightness in my muscles, which had been there since this morning after the kitchen failure, slowly started to loosen. It felt like someone had quietly unplugged a constant, low-level electric current that ran through my body. Five minutes passed. Then ten. I opened my eyes. Nova was still reading, completely undisturbed. The sun was lower now, casting long shadows across the lake. "See?" she said softly, finally looking up from her book, her expression strangely gentle. "The world didn't end. Your bank account didn't spontaneously drain itself. You just had ten minutes of not being CEO Killian Ashford.

I was nailing this. An hour passed. I hadn't been spoken to, looked at, or even acknowledged. It was glorious. I checked the time. 21:30. In the novel, the champagne incident happened around 22:00. I was in the home stretch. I could practically taste my own survival. I saw a side exit, clear and unguarded. My ticket out of here. I started moving, keeping low, my eyes fixed on the door. Ten feet. Five feet. Three feet. Freedom was so close I could feel it.

Back in the day, I mistakenly picked up a soppy, romantic novel, just for the sake of killing time, and I read how the female protagonist was counting the hours of separation from her beloved man. It seemed utterly pathetic and counterproductive to me. Now, the joke was on me. The small break I got between waiting tables and doing inventory for the cafe, I was mentally counting the days and hours without even realizing the futileness.

“Fourteen minutes?” “No,” Ines whispered. “Fourteen hours. Twenty-two minutes.” Varian straightened. Liora exhaled. She whispered, “Edda’s counting down.” Varian answered: “Then so are we.”

The book is a mini short novel with just 70 chapters but yeah, it was worth reading. We can wish until the well runs dry?

She had been waiting to read the book, but she was interrupted by unfortunate events the previous night. Flipping through the first page, she continued to the prologue where the story began. Arlene was too engrossed with the book that she didn’t notice that she had passed a lot of time. The book contained 30 chapters and she had read fifteen chapters at a go. She stopped reading when she heard her stomach rumble, so she closed the book and checked the time on her phone, it was 4 pm already. She turned on her data to check her i*******m feed and the writer’s forum she was on for updates.
