I think focusing on themes kids can actually argue about is more important than picking something that's just 'great' on a list. My daughter's class did 'The Giver' last year, and they got so heated about the ending and whether the main character's choice was selfish or brave. That's what you want – a book that doesn't have a single clear moral, something that splits the room.

I'd also look at stuff like 'Holes' by Louis Sachar. It's got that cool dual-timeline structure that feels like a puzzle, plus it's genuinely funny. It's accessible but not simple. Some kids might latch onto the curse aspect, others the friendship between Stanley and Zero, or the warden's backstory. It gives everyone a different door to walk through. Honestly, a book club pick that's too heavy on overt 'lessons' can just shut down real conversation.

On the other hand, I've seen a teacher try 'The Hunger Games' with a younger group and the violence was a bit much for some parents. So maybe something with built-in depth but a less intense surface, like 'Wonder'? It can spark talk about kindness without being preachy, and most seventh graders have dealt with cliques enough to have opinions.
