My hands fly across the wheel, correcting the drift. Then, right as we approach the infamous dead man's curve, a pair of bright, blinding headlights suddenly appears around the bend, heading straight toward us in our lane.

"Weather is clear. No local traffic." We hit the designated turn a few minutes ahead of schedule thanks to my excellent driving. I try not to take the greenish cast to Butcher’s face personally. It’s a sharp, blind curve cut right into the side of the cliff. There is zero shoulder. Anyone taking this corner has to drop their speed down to a crawl to avoid wrapping themselves around the guardrail and plummeting into the ocean. I hit the brakes hard. The Ferrari screeches to a halt, the nose of the car angled sharply out into the lane, effectively blocking half the road.

My pulse was still racing, but the practical part of my brain had begun to move through the fear, sorting lines and angles and access points the way it sorted symptoms. “This road,” I said, pointing to a faint line near the drainage ditch behind my property. “It floods in spring. There’s a culvert under it. I found fox tracks there last week and thought it was just a den route, but something had cleared the bramble.” I looked at Colton. “Could a person crawl through?” Ben leaned over the map, expression sharpening. “If they weren’t claustrophobic.” Emily swore under her breath. “That bypasses the southern slope.”

He barely had time to scream before slamming into the ground like a ragdoll. Right where he landed, a road sign loomed over him, and bold letters stated: [Dangerous Curve Ahead—High Accident Rate. Over 32 Fatalities. Drive With Caution.] Andrew raised an eyebrow, wondering if the idiot just got himself killed. Suppressing his amusement, he got out of the car and walked over to the groaning mess on the ground. "You dumbass! Who the hell drives like that? Get the fuck out of your damn car!" Kelley followed at a slower pace and watched Petey speed up on the long stretch of road. Three hundred yards later the road swerved to the left and you were forced to slow down, that’s when his brakes would fail. Kelley didn’t feel anything as he followed Petey and watched as he neared the curve in the road. Petey tapped on his brakes and he looked up with a frown when his car didn’t slow down. He took the curve blindly and he kept control of the SUV. Right ahead was an intersection and Petey swallowed nervously as he realized that his brakes wasn’t working at all.

It was known as the deadliest stretch of the entire track and the easiest place to overtake or crash. Both sides of the S-curve bore scars from countless races. The guardrails were scratched and dented, while dark tire marks stained the asphalt from previous competitions. The road tilted slightly inward, and strong winds funneled through the narrow bends, creating turbulent airflow that made it difficult for any car to maintain a clean racing line. One small mistake here could send a driver flying off the track, costing valuable time at best and ending in a devastating crash at worst. At this moment, the corner had become a battlefield waiting for Aria.
