A Curve In The Road Novels & Stories

My hands fly across the wheel, correcting the drift. Then, right as we approach the infamous dead man's curve, a pair of bright, blinding headlights suddenly appears around the bend, heading straight toward us in our lane.

"Weather is clear. No local traffic." We hit the designated turn a few minutes ahead of schedule thanks to my excellent driving. I try not to take the greenish cast to Butcher’s face personally. It’s a sharp, blind curve cut right into the side of the cliff. There is zero shoulder. Anyone taking this corner has to drop their speed down to a crawl to avoid wrapping themselves around the guardrail and plummeting into the ocean. I hit the brakes hard. The Ferrari screeches to a halt, the nose of the car angled sharply out into the lane, effectively blocking half the road.

“Tell your driver to take the bend wide, force whoever’s flanking to overcommit.” Evans relayed it fast, and the driver adjusted, cutting the wheel hard right instead of following the curve of the road, and sure enough a fourth vehicle burst out from cover on the left exactly where the bend would have funneled us straight into it. “Window,” I said, already rolling mine down. “Now.” “Felix, don’t—”

Alrick immediately slowed the SUV. “Better?” “Thank you. I just don’t like this road. I never have. When the mines were open, we’d many accidents on this road. Kelley followed at a slower pace and watched Petey speed up on the long stretch of road. Three hundred yards later the road swerved to the left and you were forced to slow down, that’s when his brakes would fail. Kelley didn’t feel anything as he followed Petey and watched as he neared the curve in the road. Petey tapped on his brakes and he looked up with a frown when his car didn’t slow down. He took the curve blindly and he kept control of the SUV. Right ahead was an intersection and Petey swallowed nervously as he realized that his brakes wasn’t working at all.

It was known as the deadliest stretch of the entire track and the easiest place to overtake or crash. Both sides of the S-curve bore scars from countless races. The guardrails were scratched and dented, while dark tire marks stained the asphalt from previous competitions. The road tilted slightly inward, and strong winds funneled through the narrow bends, creating turbulent airflow that made it difficult for any car to maintain a clean racing line. One small mistake here could send a driver flying off the track, costing valuable time at best and ending in a devastating crash at worst. At this moment, the corner had become a battlefield waiting for Aria.
