The dawn broke over the Onyxclaw estate in a wash of pale, bruised violet, offering a fleeting illusion of peace. I was walking the eastern battlements with Ronan, my heavy fur cloak pulled tightly around my shoulders against the biting mountain frost. For the first time since the siege, we had managed to steal a quiet, undisturbed hour. We were leaning against the freezing stone parapet, watching the sun slowly illuminate the sprawling, snow-covered valleys of the northern territory.

But a figure directly bypassed Sol and was the first to walk toward me on the stage. He knelt before me and took out an obsidian box carved with star patterns. When he opened the box, a ruby the size of a pigeon egg glowed inside, its light pulsing like a heartbeat. I recognized it—the Heart of the Abyss. It was said it would bring eternal love to the wearer. "Lyra," his voice was gentler than I had ever heard it, "are you willing to bind your fate with mine?"

I just lay back and stared at the ceiling, hoping I'd drawn the way I had drowned in the bathtub but this time, longer than I had drowned before. But I fell asleep. I was awoken by something warm against my skin and when I opened my eyes, I found Onyx peppering kisses down my bare shoulders. I flinched but he had me in chokehold. I wasn't expecting him to be here. "What are you doing here, Onyx?" I asked in a whisper. "Spending time with my Luna," He said as he raised his head for a moment before returning to kiss me on my neck. I felt shivers run down my spine and a sensation of ecstasy as he kept on kissing my neck.

I pat my chest where my heart lies as I calm. Remembering my hands are tied, I look around for anything sharp. Found a dagger with a chipped tip. I started to see the binding as much as I could. With a few strokes, I'm able to break free. I stood up and rubbed my wrist as I looked around. The inside of this palace is as magnificent as the outside. This palace is more ancient than any bone left in the ground. The walls stand mute as if waiting for water to call the ruffling wind. But we are underground; I don't think this palace catches a brisk wind.
