Nathan pulled me close shortly after. “Careful,” I warned, though I was smiling. “Always,” he replied. We moved slowly, gently, wrapped in the warmth of the moment. Around us, everything felt… right. Like life had finally chosen to be kind. As midnight approached, someone called out……. “Ten minutes to New Year!” The room buzzed with excitement. Glasses were filled. Voices grew louder. Everyone gathered closer together. Nathan’s arm wrapped securely around me. I rested my head lightly against his shoulder.

“Midnight comes whether you’re ready or not.” The clock on the wall ticked over to 12:00 AM. And every phone on campus lit up at once.

I hugged the frame tighter, pressing it to my chest as if holding her. And then, I began counting. Seconds. Every tick of the clock. Every shallow breath. Each one felt longer than the last. The seconds dragged into eternities, stretching until I thought I’d lose my mind. My heart hammered painfully with every passing moment. 11:50. 11:55. 11:59. And then… midnight. The faint click of the clock changing to 12:00 sent a jolt through me. My heart stopped for half a beat. This was it.

Rivener and Adrian stood on opposite sides of the clearing, both poised, both tense, both looking at her like she'd just grown antlers. Honestly? Charlie wished she had grown antlers. That would at least be predictably weird. "This is fine," she said, mostly to herself. "Just a tiny magical meltdown. Happens to everyone, right?"

Something about a bridge being nearby is the only thing I can remember. Suddenly, the world swirls and I’m standing on that bridge with Kendric. “I fell off the cliff and then ended up here. This was our third life, for sure.” Kendric looks over at me with a confused expression. “Are you seeing this too?” A ticking clock sounds from somewhere nearby and I look around to see where it’s coming from. “Do you hear that?” A voice comes out of nowhere from somewhere above us. “Midnight is coming. Run while you can.”

But the world was already unraveling. ⸻ I pressed my hand to the glass, breath fogging the window. “Ten days to midnight,” I whispered. “Then the world burns again.” And this time… I’d be ready

I needed time to think, to plan my next move. “I’ll call you back,” I said, my voice cold. “Take your time,” he replied smoothly. “But don’t take too long. You have until midnight.” And with that, he hung up. The silence that followed was deafening. I lowered the phone from my ear, my hand trembling. Midnight. That gave me a few hours to figure out how to handle this without giving in to his disgusting demand.

A minute to midnight. There was a hush in the room as the full moon rose to its peak. I counted the seconds in my head. And then it was midnight. There were whispers of 'mate' from all around me as people found the ones they were destined to be with, but I had eyes only for the man at my side. I felt an irresistible pull towards Jason.
