Cassia stared at the clock on the wall as it struck midnight, her palms slick with nervous sweat. The card in her pocket was a constant reminder of what was coming. Room 7. Midnight. Live demonstration. The words had burned into her skin since the moment he handed it to her.

Violently I shivered - it shouldn't be long now. I glanced down at my cell phone for the six millionth time and noted the time - 11:55pm. I also noted that my signal bars were registering zero. My gut churned with uneasiness. "Come on Mia," I whispered to myself, "Only five minutes to go and then you can go home." I hated to admit, but this place was really starting to get to me. "Come on midnight." The minute changed and my clock read 11:59pm.

"I already told Elsa that I'd be wearing rubber shoes. Damn it. It's going to hurt." I waited for the party to end while everyone else had fun. After thirty minutes, it was dead midnight, and I was ready to go home. Ice was running up and down my back as I drank the juice. When I felt someone was watching me, it gave me the creeps. My unease wasn't just my imagination, so I turned around to make sure.

Nine months passed and it seemed as though tension with other packs was starting to relax. They seemed to take the news of this child as a gift and not something to fear. Still, security around the small town of Atlas, the home of the Midnight pack, didn’t let up. Patrols were sent out every night, twice as many warriors as there used to be all to ensure the child was kept safe.

I sank into the couch beside them, exhaling slowly. “Thank you so much, guys,” I said quietly. Lucien rolled his eyes good-naturedly. “You’ve got to stop saying that,” he said, chuckling. “Honestly, we’re happy to be here.” Solene nodded, brushing peanut crumbs off her lap. “This house has grown on us. You have too.” Their loyalty warmed me more than I let on. “How long until it’s over?” I asked, trying to keep my voice even. Lucien checked the time, then looked up. “A few more hours. He’s almost through the last phase.”

She wondered, staring at her ceiling in the gradually deepening darkness as night approached, what exactly Billings had known, and whether he'd realized, in the final moments of his life, that he'd gotten too close to something he should never have gone near. She looked at the clock on her phone and did the math without meaning to, the way she'd started doing every night now — five hours left, then four, then three, whittling down toward the one number that had stopped feeling like a time at all and started feeling like an appointment.
