Just one night for me to forget about the pain that I carry in my chest and the scars that have to remain permanently scarred to the depth of my soul. Just this one night. And after this night, I'm gonna return to my shell. Returning to being the quiet and the ever so miserable Dawn.

FOUR.4 I had enough chocolate cookies and wine at Courtney's place. She had forced me to eat them all and now I have a runny stomach. She wanted me to have tequila but I bluntly refused before I ended up in another sex escapade with a shadow here in New York. Courtney wanted me to spend the night but I had to leave. I have annoyed Mom a lot in the space of two days. I didn't tell Courtney about the cutie that has a resemblance with the shadow in Vegas, I wouldn't want her whining and awning in my ears like a cat.

With all the media coverage that the case had garnered nation wide, he had hordes of people beating the doors down to see it. Everyone had wanted to see the infamous 'murder motel' where the crazy man and his deranged son had kidnapped all those women and then brutally murdered them. Everyone's favorite place to check out was the old well that had held all the bodies of the victims.

All I could smell was the rich, earthy scent the rain drummed up. As the night drew on, I searched every street possible, trying to think like Hazel, and wonder where she would turn to for safety. But Hazel seemed to have disappeared. Eventually, when it was midnight, I walked into a motel, soaked, and dripping wet. “Welcome, young man.” A fat lady devouring a bag of chips at the counter said in horror. “You're so white. You need boarding, right? Oh, please come in.” She rushed to the door, pushing it shut against the strong wind. She eyed the muscles bulging against my soaked shirt for a while before returning to the counter.

“We’ll take the next exit and get you help.” He heard her tone. She couldn’t wait to get rid of him. He pulled at the sticking fabric on his legs and, feeling like a real asshole, looked out his window in silence. *** There wasn’t even a gas station at the next exit, much less a repair shop. But there was a motel complete with a stereotypical red neon sign and back-roads diner attached. Kat pulled into the overflowing parking lot. “I guess people are getting in out of the rain, huh? It’s packed.”

The feeling that they had stopped woke Cassie from her nap. Cracking her neck from side to side to eradicate the kinks, she eyed the scene before her in confusion and wondered if it were a dream. The neon flashing vacancy sign for the Starlight Motel advertised per hour rates at a place that was a windy day away from demolition. Two floors of weathered doors with cast iron railing along the length stood out against the peeling paint and ratty shingles. An all-night diner on one end illuminated the parking lot which was strangely full.

One girl even reached down and rubbed it a couple of times with her hand. Everyone got into the sprit of the thing and Rob and I ended up smashed. Smashed and broke, although we didn't realize how broke until after everyone else had taken off. We were standing in front of the Kit Kat digging through our pockets trying to come up with enough to pay for a cab and not doing it. Cabs in our town were notorious for not taking checks, but I did have a credit card and six blocks down the street was the Shangri-La Motel. Eight minutes up the road, there was a motel set back from the highway behind a gas station and a sad-looking diner with a flickering sign. The motel itself looked like it hadn’t been renovated since before either of us were born. Two floors, exterior corridors, a parking lot with a couple of trucks and a minivan sitting in it. A bored-looking older woman at the front desk who barely looked up from her phone when Zane walked in.
