She had been awake for the last hour, stubbornly courting sleep, angrily refusing to allow her thoughts to take control, to force her to remember. She was too hyped up for sleep, too afraid to sleep just in case she... She what? Dreamed of Roth? She looked across at the desk in front of the window. One of the small pleasures of living in the depths of the country was that one did not need to close the curtains at night. There was nothing She liked more than being able to see the night sky.

He decided to wear a nightgown because it was getting late. Before falling asleep, he opened the big curtains in his room. He wanted to see the beauty of Scotland at night. The moon is bright, the tall buildings are sparkling. He always likes the view at night. And of course the nightlife, he hasn’t stepped foot into the club in a long time. He promised to return to the club after returning from here. He missed his friend Jane, and of course alcohol.

Pitch dark inside was punctuated by spiraling neon spotlights, flickering strobe lights, and the black-lit haze of scantily clad bodies undulating on a tightly packed dance floor. Nina sauntered in first, leading the way. She reached up and touched the bouncer’s chest with her fingertips and dragged them along his pecs as she passed by. Adham said, laughing. Adham and Nelly headed toward the water. Adel gestured toward the lounger and said to Naomi, “Please.” Naomi lay down on the lounger. Adel lay beside her. In a whisper, as she watched Adham and Nelly entering the water, Naomi said, “Tonight at ten we’ll be at the nightclub. You can come. If Adham doesn’t invite you, it’s only because he’s too kind. I want to see you—maybe we can enjoy another night.”

Before I overthink and talk myself out of it, I dial Nadia and Katya into a conference call. “Girls,” I chirp. Nadia groans immediately. “Why do you have this much energy at night?” Katya huffs. “She didn’t sound like this when I left her.” I ignore both of them. “Do you feel like dancing tonight?” “Yes,” Nadia says instantly. “Absolutely not,” Katya says at the same time. I smile. “It’s settled then. We’re going to Truth.” “I didn’t agree to anything,” Katya snaps.

Her eyes widened, and she saw the smirk tug at the corner of his lips. “I-I’ll go with you,” she stammered, swallowing hard. She couldn’t help but grip his collar and pull him closer. She tugged so hard that he had to lean down toward her. “Anywhere! I don’t have any worth tomorrow anyway!” She would treat this night as her bachelorette party. If it wasn’t going to be with the man she loved, she’d rather give her virginity to this stranger than to that old man, Fuentes! He wouldn’t get to benefit from her body! Just the thought of it made her skin crawl.

I said, stretching slightly. “Oh, that is true,” she replied. “We should get some rest now.” I lay down on the bed beside her. I would have preferred to be there but of course, I am never listened to, especially since about two years ago when I was told the faith of me inheriting my parents company relied on me getting married. We both liked watching movies from the '80s because we were weird like that. Then when we were done watching the movie, we kept driving and driving and driving. We managed to reach around the outskirts of the city in the luminous night, and it was one of those nights you wouldn’t forget.
