“You should have known better, Paige!” my mother hisses, slamming her fork down. “Before you brought that bastard into our lives, you should have known what kind of man he really was. Even when someone pretends, there are always signs! But no, you were blinded. You let him ruin us. I’m ashamed to even call you my daughter.”
Paige flinches, more tears spilling.
My mother’s gaze shifts to me, suddenly warm, almost admiring and proud. “Look at Piper,” she says, gesturing toward Elijah. “She brought home a true gentleman. Even at first glance, you can tell he has a good heart. He’s human.”
