Harry kicked the young man and gave him a look for being so clueless. “I’m going to the bathroom,” I said softly. I rose slowly, not wanting to lose my temper in front of everyone. Lionel glanced at me, then at Sandra, but ultimately didn’t follow me. When I returned, everyone had eaten and drunk their fill and was now sitting on the beach. Sandra and Lionel sat closely together, their postures intimate. I quietly found a spot in one corner to sit alone.

“I can not scent like them.” “I have that taken care of.” He said and gestured to a sack in a corner of the room. “You have been thinking about this for quite a long time right?” I asked, my eyes on him as he ripped the sack open. “Yes,” He said. “I have thought of everything, every word, every action, and counter plans if one of my many plans happened to fail.” My nostrils picked up the scent of a stranger. “This scent... it belongs to a stranger,” I said, hissing in annoyance.

Realizing that her things were gone. My heart dropped in my chest. Where was my mate? Scanning the room, I spotted the note on the edge of the bed. I fought my way out of the tangle of the down comforter. Crawling over to it, trying not to panic. I hadn’t told her how important she was to me, and now she was gone. This couldn’t be the end for us. Already I could feel my stomach turning, I hoped the note said she was getting breakfast. I knew that it wouldn't, but I couldn't help but hope.

Patrick had gone mad, hell-bent on destroying everything to get even. I gripped the photo, my nails digging into my palm. "Ma'am?" a teammate asked warily, seeing my pale face. "What now?" The timer showed less than 30 minutes. I commanded, "Evacuate everyone within three miles. Link to military satellites and lock onto every city camera. He wants to send a gift? I'll show him how I unwrap it." ... I stood before the bomb, its red timer ticking: 29:59, 29:58...

I asked, voice rough with exhaustion. “I think,” he said carefully, “it’s scared of what we become when we stop trying to be perfect, and just… burn together.” I smiled into his skin. “I’m not afraid,” I whispered. He kissed the top of my head. “Then neither am I.” But outside, the wind shifted. The scent of ash reached us on the air. And far in the distance… A howl rose. Not wild. Not mourning. But marching.

Yvonne and Clarisse both pulled up to the cafe at the same time. The cafe was a small, chic place just outside the school perimeter, smelling strongly of expensive coffee and cinnamon. It was filled with soft chatter and the clink of porcelain, a strange, bright, and calm backdrop for the cold war about to begin.
