JANE I heard the words leave my mouth before I could stop them. "It's only fair to end this with a little bit of crass, is it not?" His eyebrows went up. Interest flickered across his face. I stood, tucking the bills into my purse with deliberate slowness. Five hundred dollars. That was textbooks and maybe even groceries that weren't ramen. My hands weren't shaking anymore. I was Jailbird now. Fully Jailbird. Jane Puckett was locked away somewhere safe.

She navigated through her days, each step heavy with the weight of her secret, the echoes of her cries in the hallway etching into her memory. On a crisp autumn afternoon, the golden leaves fluttered down from the trees, casting a warm, melancholic hue over the Summerfield University campus. Maiari walked with a deliberateness in her step, her gaze fixed on the horizon as if searching for answers in the distant sky. John made a sign as if to show that he had done nothing too much and returned to the mansion, leaving me stunned admiring the simple flower in my hands. END OF FLASHBACK. I smiled at the memory, remembering that I still had that flower in the middle of a book, the place I had chosen to keep it.

I look at her with a confused expression, "Did you not see a woman attached to his arm at the mall? He even brought her back here! What kind of decent person brings their mistriss home when their wife is still there? Disgusting." Hestia pauses for a moment and then sighs, "I should go and bring back more cookies." I nod and watch as she leaves, hearing the click of the door behind her. I swear I could hear Anthony's laugh downstairs and it drives my heart rate back up. I stand and turn on the tv, turning it up loud enough to drown out any other kind of noise. I take a deep breath and lay down on my bed, looking at the tv but not paying attention to what is on the screen.

"Yeah, Luke, go back. Don't look back. Things are well as they are now. You've taken wonderful care of Misty." "Actually, she has a nickname, Peace. "Peace, may peaceful days prevail. "Hazel, may you have peace every year from now on." Those intense waves of affection have endured through the passage of time, persisting until this very day. Now, should I hold resentment toward him? He shielded and protected our child, bearing the immense burden in silence. Yet, no one knew the extent of the pressure he faced to keep the child with us.
