When I left the Chaney residence, I felt that someone behind me was looking at me. As soon as I looked back, there was no one there. "What's wrong?" Kash asked me. "Nothing." Jeffrey stood in the darkness, holding a picture. His eyes became wet. It was a photo of him with a girl when they were young. But that bright and arrogant Audrey, with him in her heart, could never come back.

As the car zoomed off, he kept staring at me; I pulled off my shades, ruffled his hair, and said to him. "I don't think we will ever go back to Massachusetts, Theo", I said in a small voice drowning those memories that were threatening to spring forth, those ugly memories. "Why?" Ted and Timmy whined. "Louisiana is beautiful, you will have fun, the weather is great, the sun is bright —" But they didn't let me finish when they cut me off. "We don't want the sun." They whined again. "Yes, I know. You will also make new friends in your new school”. I said in a very patient voice.

Donovan had not come begging for it. Perhaps he was too ashamed. Perhaps he did not even know about it, or perhaps my mother-in-law had finally understood something. Either way, my connection to her ended with that money and the prepaid fees. It would be the best ending if both of us could find peace.
