I laughed quietly and tried to picture it and found that I couldn't, which somehow made Damien seem more real and more human than almost anything else had so far.
Then something fluttered near my shoulder. A butterfly, blue, landed gently on me. "Oh." Vesper smiled. "It likes you." We kept walking and another appeared, then two more, then three, following along at my shoulder. Vesper slowed. "...That's odd." "What?" "They don't usually..." She frowned. "...Never mind."
They stayed. No matter which direction I walked they kept pace, one on my hand, one in my hair. I laughed softly. "What is happening?" Vesper looked genuinely uncertain for the first time all morning, which itself was unusual.
