The farmhouse appeared. Old. Stone. Covered in vines. Vera parked the car. "We are here." I looked out the window. "It looks abandoned." "That is the point." We walked inside. A fire burned. Beds in every room. Food in the kitchen. Toys in the corner. The children ran inside. Laughing. Free. Lily hugged my leg. "I like this farmhouse." I picked her up. "Me too." Rex walked to the window. His face was tight.

"Actually, I'm gonna go see if I can find some more info on this land owner. I'll catch up with you back at the Den." Tarloh and Talia started the long trip to the outskirts of town. Once in the woods, they morphed into their animal sides and made rapid progress on their way to the abandoned building. It was really quite large. Florence's POV The farmhouse sat far from the main road, hidden behind a thicket of skeletal trees. Weeds grew tall around it, and the ground was a churned-up mess of mud and old tire tracks. The building itself looked like it was dying. The roof sagged in the middle as if a giant hand had pressed down on it. One whole side of the front porch had collapsed into a pile of rotten wood. The windows were boarded up from the inside with thick, gray planks of wood, nailed in a haphazard X-pattern.
