I slipped inside, leaving the door ajar. Walking to the small shelf above her bed, I glided my hand over the books—princess stories and lullabies. I had never been read a bedtime story as a child. I didn’t have that privilege, as both Mama and Papa were equally busy in their own understandable way. I picked up one of the ridiculously pink decorative books. It was titled The Princess and the Frog. I flipped through the pages and finished the whole thing, unable to stop the smile curling my lips.

While Edward on the other hand remained on the phone even as night fell. Kelvin had already read Aiden an entire storybook, and Aiden fell asleep at the end of it. Soon after, Kelvin found himself yawning uncontrollably. He glanced at the clock to see the time, he realized it was nearly midnight he decided to go to bed without waiting any longer.

Xavier said as I settled Loise in bed. “Okay,” I nodded, because I had something to ask him as well. I nodded and picked her bedtime stories. It was a Sleeping Beauty retelling. Xavier’s POV I never thought I’d attend a book reading, talk less of one for little children, yet here I was watching Nicole read bedtime stories about a sleeping knight and the princess who came to save him. “You do this to make her sleep at night?” I asked. “Yes, you should also try it since you have that thing… insomnia,” Loise said.

"I know you're awake, so get up." She groaned sleepily. "James, please, I fell asleep at three o'clock in the morning, so could you please shut up and let me sleep?" she asked, hugging the pillow beside her. "And it's not my fault you didn't go to bed early; we already talked about it, so don't give me that reason. Will you stand there, or will I drag you to the bathroom?" James threatened. She moaned once more. Damn, this jerk! Despite her love for him, there are times when she just wants to torture him. Does he not notice how sleepy I am?

As she settled in beside him, Theo snuggled close, his small body seeking the warmth and comfort of her presence. "Mama Hazel, will you tell me a bedtime story?" Theo asked, his eyes filled with anticipation. Hazel smiled, her heart swelling with love for the sweet boy who had captured her heart. She began to weave a tale of magical adventures and brave heroes, her voice soft and soothing in the quiet of the night. As the story unfolded, Theo's eyelids grew heavy, his breathing slowing into the steady rhythm of sleep. Hazel watched over him, her hand resting on his back, feeling the gentle rise and fall of his chest with each breath.

At this point, I could not stand being married to him anymore. Ava got up and cupped my hand in her tiny palms. “Mommy, I’ll take you to bed to get some sleep. The teachers at kindergarten always tell me that you should get some sleep if you're tired!" I felt much better when I noted how loving Ava was. With that, we went to bed. I covered us with a blanket and laid side by side. I read bedtime stories to her—something I would never run out of to tell her. At some point in the night, the rhythm of her breathing became faint and steady.

She poured herself another glass of cheap red, already on her third, and dropped onto the couch in her pencil skirt and blouse, buttons half undone. The city lights through the rain-streaked windows. Her laptop was still open on the coffee table, case files glowing like accusatory little rectangles. She should sleep. Instead she reached for the dusty old book she’d bought on a drunken whim two years ago at that weird occult shop downtown. *Daemonologie for the Modern Woman.* Stupid. But tonight it felt like the right kind of stupid. She flipped it open, scanned a page at random, and slurred the words under her breath. Latin? Probably, didn’t matter.

The Bedtime Story The twins were tucked into their beds, smelling of lavender soap and fresh cotton. The room was dim, lit only by the glow of the nightlight shaped like a crescent moon. "Story time!" Lyra demanded, clutching her stuffed wolf. "The one about the King!" she requested. Alex sat in the rocking chair between their beds, stretching his long legs out. Zara leaned against the doorframe, listening. "Again?" Alex asked. "You know how it ends." he told them.

It took me almost half an hour to finally make her eat her dinner. She complained about every bite. Too hot. Too cold. Too big. By the time she finished, both of us were exhausted. She climbed back onto the bed, curling up like a sleepy kitten. I changed her into her nightdress and tucked her in. “Mumma, a story,” she murmured, already half asleep. I picked up her favourite book and started reading softly. And somewhere between the princess finding her way home and the moon blessing the child, Aurora drifted off to sleep.

He shifted, turned toward her and crawled forward, resting his head there just like he used to when he was smaller. She stroked his hair. They stayed like that for a long while. She almost thought he’d fallen asleep, until he asked, “Mommy… are you mad at me?” She paused. And then, she smiled. “No,” she whispered. “Of course not.” “Here, let me read your bedtime story.” Then she picked up the storybook from the nightstand. The same one he always chose. Something about a flying bear and a moon-shaped rocket. She opened it and began reading, her voice slow and soothing.
