I don’t like it when he looks at me, it give me these weird feelings in the pit of my stomach. “Mommy, eat,” Xavier said as he brought a fork to my mouth. Smiling at him, I took a bite and shuffled his hair. I sat down beside him as I began eating. After eating and watching TV for some time, Xavier wanted me to read him a bedtime story, which after tucking Vincent in, I’m in Xavier’s room reading Pinocchio. I take a look at him to see his eyes already drowsy. He was already falling asleep. I kept the book back on the bedside table. “Good night, baby,” I whispered.

Chapter 1: Sinful thoughts I lay on the big king size bed in the master bedroom, the sheets already twisted around my legs. My husband had left yesterday morning for his week-long business trip. He had given me the usual quick kiss at the door and promised to call when he landed, but I knew he probably wouldn’t.

“Mommy.” I looked at him instantly. “Yes baby?” “Can you read me a bedtime story please?” he asked sleepily. “Sure baby,” I quickly sat by him. “I’ll read it offhand. Is that okay?” He nodded. I went on to tell him a few stories I could remember from my childhood and by the time I was done, he was already fast asleep. I leapt to my feet and snuck out of the room. When I got to Malcolm and my room, he was not there.

When I see how much time is spent,I read them a bedtime story about the rabbit and the hare. I am in the middle of reading when I notice quietness, and I look down to notice the twins are already fast asleep. I close the book before leaning over to drop it on a nightstand. I pat their hair,a sigh of contentment escaping my lips, before kissing them on their heads. "Good night, my babies." I mutter,a smile on my lips, as I slowly drift into dreamland.

Davina lamented. “Are you a grown-up? The answer is No! You are still a child and sleeping early would help your brain’s activities.” I responded. I tucked them in successfully and turned off the light after reading a short bedtime story of Mama Bear and Baby Bear. Striding carefully out of the room I closed the door gently behind me. “Is there anything you want me to do for you before retiring for the day?” Nana Amy asked. “No, you can leave now. But before you go, where is Father?” I inquired.

Then came bedtime. Reasonable. Peanut already asleep in the nursery. God. Tiny and peaceful. Fair. Meanwhile Lily lay beneath her blankets. Reasonable honestly. Mr. Buttons tucked safely beneath one arm. God. Adrian sat beside her bed. Fair. The usual routine. Reasonable. A story. A goodnight kiss. God. Then sleep. Fair. Or at least that was the plan. Reasonable. Then Lily spoke. God. "Dada?" Fair. There it was. Reasonable honestly.

I said softly, stroking his head. He nodded and ran to his room. I followed behind him, just like I used to. Got his pajamas, helped him brush his teeth, wiped his little hands with a towel—our old nightly routine. “Mommy, read me a story,” he said, climbing into bed and pulling the blanket up to his chest. I smiled and picked one of his favorite storybooks from the shelf titled The Rabbit’s Adventure in the Mushroom Forest. I sat beside him, reading slowly, my voice almost a whisper. Noah looked at me with half-closed eyes, still fighting off sleep.

Bedtime. Usually, this was Aurora's domain. It was her sacred hour, the time when the CEO vanished and the "Maman" took over. She would read Goodnight Moon or The Little Prince, her voice a soft, rhythmic lullaby that chased away the dragons. But tonight, Liam stood in the doorway. He was wearing a simple gray t-shirt and sweatpants, his feet bare on the plush carpet. He held a book in his hand. Not a picture book. A chapter book.

I whispered with a loving smile, “Which story would you like tonight?” Mike’s face lit up with excitement, his tiny hands reaching for his favorite book. “The one about the brave little wolf, Mumma!” I chuckled as I opened the book, a captivating story about a young wolf’s rand adventure. Mike listened with rapt attention, his eager eyes fixed on the pages as I spun the tale of bravery and exploration. By the time I reached the part where the little wolf found solace under the silvery glow of the moon, my son was already fast asleep.
