The scent hit me, cinnamon, vanilla, sweet apples baked in butter and sugar. Storm stirred, his tiny fingers reaching toward the lights.
Blaise took him from my arms, whispering softly, “See that, little man? That’s your grandpa’s tree. Big as the sky.”
We gathered around the fireplace, laughing, eating, and drinking hot cocoa until our hands thawed. The world felt new again, calm, safe, bright.
