The driver didn’t react. He just kept driving, like ignoring my meltdown was part of the job. Then the rain stopped. Sunlight broke through the clouds like it had something to prove. And there it was. A rainbow. Bright, dramatic, and way too proud of itself, hanging over the house like it was here for the show.

Thick grey shapes roll over the meadow until the blue disappears completely. The air grows colder. Thunder rumbles somewhere far away. Evening settles in quickly. A storm is coming. Figures in the meadow begin to blur at the edges as darkness spreads across the field. Just my kind of luck. Honestly, waking up now would be perfect. Rain suddenly crashes down from the sky. Cold water slams against my shoulders and head. Within seconds my clothes are soaked through. The rain keeps falling harder. That settles it. Definitely time to wake the hell up.

Outside the hospital window, the rain had stopped. A brilliant rainbow stretched across the sky. Little Clara pointed excitedly. “Look!” Everyone turned toward the window. For a long moment, they simply admired the colors. No portals. No fractures. No collapsing worlds. Just a rainbow after the storm. I think it’s time. For the first time in months, Joyce felt a certainty she hadn’t even realized she’d been craving. Outside, the last of the rain cleared. She thought that this painting was evidently different from ‘Rainfall’ as well. ‘Rainfall’ was a black and white watercolor painting, whereas this was a colored painting. Although the features and angles of the scenery depicted in the painting were similar, this painting had additional features. For example, there was a rainbow in the painting.

There must be a real rainbow after the rain. And I do hope that James will give his family a chance to start all over again and he should also give himself a chance to restart a life that was once put on hold because of the expectations of his family.
