The reason I spent years chasing shadows across countries while everyone back home assumed I was expanding business interests. A humorless smile tugs at my lips. If only it had been that simple. I reach into the drawer of my desk and pull out a worn photograph. The edges are bent. The colors have faded. Yet the face staring back at me remains painfully familiar. For a moment, I simply look at it. Two decades. Twenty bloody years. Twenty years of dead ends, lies, and people disappearing at exactly the wrong time. Twenty years of questions nobody seems willing to answer. My grip tightens around the photograph.

I free him from his pants and wrap my hand around him and he shudders violently, a broken sound escaping his throat. “Twenty years.” His voice is strained, barely controlled. “I haven’t been touched in twenty years.” “I know.” I stroke him slow, learning his shape, his weight, the way he throbs against my palm. “That’s twenty years of wanting and denying and suffering. All for nothing.”

I am not really sure. She did not even look at me. She did not say a word. The woman was completely silent. She picked up her cup. Then she walked past me like I did not even exist and she just kept going. I just stood there. I was completely frozen. So that is it? That is all I get after twenty-two years? I spent my life wishing for her to love me like she did before Lila was born. After giving up my own future to help save her husband.

Wasn't Twenty supposed to be a magical birthday and a milestone into adulthood, accompanied by great privileges and legal implications? Wasn't Twenty the age to vote, buy a house, wed your high school sweetheart, go to jail, get sued, and gamble away your tuition in Vegas? Well, mine wasn't.

At the end of the story, I was laughing my ass off. "After twenty years of marriage you still get jealous," my dad says to my mom. I look at the two and I want this, I want this for my future.
