As Avani lands, holding the talon up so the hybrid isn’t crushed, I lean over and put my hands on my knees, trying to catch my breath.
“You okay there, old man. Don’t go dying on me. Zephyr would never forgive me.”
“Shut it, Avani. You’re way older than I am,” I tell him, making him chuckle.
I stand, walking over to his talons.
“Young man, my name is Ishir. I know you came from a laboratory that was experimenting on you and several others. We’ve been out looking for the survivors and for those that hurt you. We’ve found four, and now you make five out of what we think is twenty-three. It’s not enough, but your varying scents make it hard to find you.”
