Each step felt like a march toward an altar.
When she entered the study, locking the door behind her, she found the room transformed. The usual desk lamp was off. Only the fireplace illuminated the space, casting long, dancing shadows. Alistair stood before it, not in his usual shirt and trousers, but in a black turtleneck and dark pants. He looked like a priest of some arcane order.
“Remove the coat,” he said, his voice echoing softly in the fire-lit gloom.
She let the coat slip from her shoulders, standing naked before him, the heat of the flames warming her front. Her skin glowed in the orange light.
