Leo was pushing through, claiming what was his. And then, Alex’s bones began to snap. He cried out, his hands bracing against the dirt as his body convulsed, shifting against his will. His arms elongated, his nails darkening into claws, his skin stretching, fur pushing through. His face contorted, his jaw lengthening, reshaping into a powerful, fanged muzzle.

Alpha Maximus and I approach him, 'Congratulations, Alex,' we say to him. Alex is speechless, staring down at the sweet little bundle. 'So, is it a boy or a girl?' I ask. 'I’m not sure,’ he laughs. He opens the blanket to check. 'It's a boy! It's a boy!' he says happily. We’re so happy for him. Then Doctor Matlin walks over to us, 'I'm so sorry, Alex.' he whispers. 'Don't you mean congratulations?' Alex says with confusion. 'Bella is gone, I'm sorry, but she didn't survive the birth,' he says sadly.

The clone screamed, not in pain, but rage. Alexander staggered to his feet, grabbing a steel rod from the wreckage. “Hey!” he shouted. “You forgot something, me.” He swung with every ounce of strength left in him. The blow connected, shattering the side of the clone’s face. Silver fluid spilled like mercury. But AX-01 only smiled. “You can’t kill what’s better than you.” “Watch me.” Evelyn saw the warning too late. The clone moved in a blur, slamming Alexander back into the control unit. Sparks exploded as systems overloaded.

The rest of the day passed in a soft blur. They didn’t leave the chamber. They didn’t need to. They lay in bed talking, sharing stories they hadn’t had the courage to tell before.
