Is she asleep?” Unlike other days, I couldn’t hear her giggles or screams. Looking around, I couldn’t even find a trace of her.

No, no need to read the first one to understand this one, but probably some details will make sense if read in order.

Elara hesitates. This could be dangerous. Alice could be here to hurt her. But she sees an opportunity. Alice is vulnerable right now. Broken. This might be the moment Elara has been waiting for. She opens the door but keeps the chain lock engaged.

Alice’s face turned red with disapproval. “How can you bully me for feeding you deliciousness, Snugglebug?!” She faked a cry and I loved it as her stomach danced with the motion. “Must be a good book.” I nodded at the novel in her hand since she was keenly engrossed in it earlier. Alice brought it closer to her face as if she wanted me to read it on it. “It's dark romance but it's my type. The female lead falls in love with the villain she hated.”

They looked very old. I picked up the first book. The cover felt soft under my fingers. I opened it carefully. The writing was faded in places, but I could still read it.
