My breath hitched. Annalisa’s face, alight with laughter from some social gathering, flashed in my mind. The warmth of her hand in mine, the way her eyes crinkled at the corners when she smiled. This was madness. I couldn’t just throw that away.
“But...Annalisa, she has nothing to do with this,” I stammered, the words tumbling out in a desperate plea. “She’s different. I saw the way she looked at those hungry kids outside the opera house, the way her eyes welled up. She can’t be a part of it.”
