I said, my voice getting louder with each word. A large disfigured spider, almost the same size as me, jumped out; its eyes were pitch black, and it had a scorpion's stinger at its back. "Stay away!" I yelled as I struggled. "Is someone there?! Magnus! Meredith!" I transformed halfway into my wolf form and growled at the spider, hoping to scare it away, but it persisted forward. The spider's beady eyes fixed on me, and it charged towards me with an eerie screech. I screamed, struggling to escape from the grip of the quicksand. But the spider ran straight into the quicksand, sinking like I was.

I shook my clothes with effort, but softly; trying to get whatever was crawling inside my clothes to come off without raising an alarm. And then it came off. But it landed on my arm. And when I saw the brown hairs standing on end; with four eyes looking up at me, eight legs spread out on my hand, and its body that was the size of mother's comb. I screamed again. Foolishly. But I felt only half guilty. Because it was a Spider. It was a Tarantula. I screamed louder. And shoved it away, sending it flying into the darkness, then shot my hands to my mouth again. Now cursing myself. For screaming. Twice.

I leaned over the basin, gripping the porcelain. I coughed. It was a reflexive, dry hack, my throat still tight from the panic. Something came up. It landed in the center of the white porcelain with a soft, wet thud. I froze, the water running cold over my hands. I looked down. There, lying in the sink, was a spider. It wasn't a hallucination. It wasn't a shadow. It was a common house spider, its legs curled inward in a defensive posture, twitching slightly as it succumbed to the moisture.

“Where did it go?” And then, she saw it. Now it was on the floor. Crawling toward her like a tiny eight-legged menace with evil intentions. “No. No, no, no—” Dysis whimpered, her eyes darting between the spider and Alexander, panic growing by the second. Without thinking, she climbed onto him. Not figuratively. Literally. With a single, smooth movement, she clambered onto his torso, her arms encircling his neck and her legs gripping his waist like a frightened koala. Her heart was pounding in her chest as though her life relied on it.

That was only my assumption, but it was quite a solid assumption. Then I moved over to the books, and picked one out. A large spider came crawling out of it immediately I opened a page randomly, and I dropped the book. "What would a spider be doing in a book?" I asked in disgust, and happened to look up. I didn't know why I did, but I did anyway, and I saw large spiders, in large numbers, staring down at me. I was startled, and moved back quickly, bumping into the glass table in between the sofas, and that resulted in my falling to the floor.

I pulled it out and held it up to the torchlight. It was a book. It was small but thick, the cover made of dark, cracked leather. Most of the pages seemed to be intact, although they looked very brittle and yellow. Just then, something moved on the cover. I yelped quietly and nearly dropped it. A large, pale spider skittered its way across the surface and disappeared over the edge. I shook the book once, gently, and it plopped to the floor and scurried away. Looking back at the book, I turned it over in my hands and wiped the dust off the cover.

It moved left and right in a lonely manner, sometimes touching the dust particles on the ground with its tentacles, sometimes hesitating because of the uneven seams in the tiles, and going around in circles. It kept dazzling in front of my eyes.

“One-hour cooldown. That was it.” Hayley let out a short breath. “Right… so that was our one miracle then.” “Pretty much.” Sofia stared at the boss. “That’s insane damage.” “Yeah,” Riley muttered. “Which probably means—” The spider shrieked. The sound tore through the cavern, sharp and furious, echoing off the walls. Then the ground moved. Webbing tore. And they came. Spiderlings. They dropped from above, poured from the walls, flooded the floor in a wave that shattered the moment instantly.

The ship had sailed. I felt like a desperate bitch. My phone vibrated. Lately, I felt excited when it did because no one had ever tried to remember calling me at this time. When I looked at the screen, it was not who I expected it to be. FORREST: Did you get home safe? I rolled my eyes before I typed my reply. NO. Why do you even care? I was dragged by a gargantuan spider in the alley, bit me, and imprisoned me with its gross and sticky web. Now, I’m dying. Lonely. And it’s all because of you.
