A spider , no, a massive spider, was crawling up my leg. Its body was jet black, its legs long and spindly, and it was unlike any spider I had ever seen before.

Carefully, I took a few steps, eyes darting everywhere. Broken bricks, empty cement bags, scattered wood… and spiders. Dozens of spiders clinging to the half-built pillars. “Jesus Christ!” I screamed, stumbling back in horror. My skin broke out in cold sweat. I hated spiders. I absolutely hated them with all the living being in me. My legs wobbled as I tried to step away.

I crawl farther away from the bed despite the pain. I look back at the bed and see the spider emerge from the tangled blanket. Two of it's front legs are barely moving, the ones I stomped on yesterday. No wonder it has lost most of it's speed. I should probably find something to kill it now that we are both trapped in here. I look at the stuff in the room, but the door bursts open before I spot anything. Help is better than fight. "The spider is back . . . " I trail off after noticing that the person who has stepped inside cannot be my savior.

I stabbed over my head, dragging the blade with me towards its rear with a spill of silk. Its belly exploded in scurrying baby spiders, each the size of a housecat. The newly birthed young devoured their mother from the inside out, her screams shrill and lengthy. I ran up onto her fallen corpse, the hard shell of her carapace shattering under my heels, and leapt free, seizing upon a strand of thread that was suspended from a tree. The baby spiders surged up the trunk and I tied the thread around my waist so that I dangled over the massacre, as they pursued me.

I twisted sideways sharply, shifting back to human form and drawing the silver knife Rhys had given me. Silver flashed as the blade plunged into the spider's belly. The spider shrieked, its limbs twitching frantically. I shifted back to wolf form and lunged at its exposed weak spot – the soft tissue under its head. A fatal blow. The spider fell, but the poison was spreading. My fur was matted with it in several places, the wounds burning. Venom-Mist Spiders wouldn't just show up here. It was… Cassidy. That strange smell earlier, and the "herbs" she was gathering near the cave – it was a scent to lure the spiders!

One spider fell straight toward me, and I accepted it. Until something dark blocked it. It smelled like earth. The barrier shifted, and I saw Fredrick’s face. “Thank God. Just in time!” He reached out his hand. “Come on, Maddie!” I took Fredrick’s hand and struggled to stand. This time, I could clearly see the surroundings as the sun began to rise. Spider corpses were everywhere, along with the remains of unlucky participants. The broodmother’s fate was sealed. Her grotesque body lay collapsed on the ground, like a lump of black clay oozing a foul stench.
