My Step-Uncle's Plaything
We held hands as we walked toward Mom, but before we reached her, Uncle Lemuel stepped out of the fitting room.
“Hi, Uncle,” Javier greeted politely, as he always did. I still didn’t know why Mom couldn’t fully warm up to him.
“How are you, Javier? Long time no see.” Uncle Lemuel smiled, though I could tell he felt the same way Mom did about my boyfriend. But at least he never bad-mouthed Javier.
“I’ve just been busy with school lately,” Javier said, rubbing the back of his neck shyly.
“That’s good. Just one more year and you two will graduate.” He looked at us both and smiled. “Alright, go help your girlfriend choose her dress. I’ll go look for Annabelle.”
