My heart was beating so fast I was sure they could hear it over the low thrum of music. "Gentlemen," Lorenzo began, his voice carrying that smooth authority that made people listen whether they wanted to or not. "I'd like you to meet Ellie Knight." He paused, and I felt his eyes on me even though I was staring at my hands folded in my lap. "She's officially a Black Rose now, under our protection." The words settled over the table like a heavy blanket. I didn't know what being a Black Rose meant, but from the way the three strangers straightened in their seats, it was clearly something significant. Something that changed how they looked at me.

“You’re vibrating.” Amelia rolled her eyes, even as her smile betrayed her. “It’s just… it’s been a while since something this good didn’t come with gunfire.” Ruby smirked. “Don’t jinx it.” Leona handed her the bouquet, white roses, baby’s breath, and one stubborn red tulip that Ruby had insisted on “for rebellion.” Amelia looked down at it, laughing softly. “Where’s Kelvin?” she asked. Ruby shrugged. “Pacing. Practicing his vows. Probably thinking about security drills.”

I pushed the thought away because I had more important things to do. One thing had to be done. In fact, I resumed it. Carter glanced up at me, didn’t say anything, and just went along with Amelia’s suggestion. “Hurry, go cut them for me,” she ordered. I misunderstood her intention. Putting on my gloves, I grabbed a pair of scissors and walked into the garden. I had just cut the first rose when Amelia suddenly screamed. “Mia! If you don’t like roses, you can tell me!” “I saved the best roses just for you!” “That’s a rare species. How could you cut it with scissors?!” Carter looked over from the distance. My heart jumped violently. Panicking, I threw away both the gloves and the scissors and grabbed the remaining roses with my bare hands.
