It's hard to focus without her, but I lead Axar into the small library with me as I begin to search. Having been alive for so long I've acquired many books and ancient pieces of literature. Some are in immaculate shape, others are torn segments and several pages, barely tethered together by bits of spine. Many of these are family heirlooms as well, handwritten and handed down to future generations for guidance. Nodding toward the book he said, "Is this what you encountered?" I pulled the book closer. When Laeddin leaned in to see as well, I held my breath, fighting to ignore his beckoning blood. The book had pictures of skulls with smoke coming off them, their eyes glowed red. Human bodies bent at strange angles. The pictures definitely resembled what I'd seen happen with the man in the forest and with Abby. Several different kinds of names were given, but demura wasn't one of them. There also wasn't any information on how they could be killed. "I think so."

When Charlotte awoke later that morning, she spent the day in the library, researching Amahl, the king of the night demons. After two days of high temperatures and intense boredom, he remembered the three books. Sam pulled out the one with the Mummy on the cover, because it looked the most innocuous. It was entitled the Ninth Pan Book of Horror Stories. He wasn’t the least bit prepared for what he found inside. The first three stories involved emasculation, murder and burning at the stake. In his fevered state Sam felt he was not only watching the characters’ suffering, he was experiencing it along with them. He flung the book at the wall and then hid it again, wishing he could burn it like Jinnot, the young girl in the third story who was burned alive.
