The wide-eyed boy studied the guest that was introduced by his father as his brother, not by blood but by heart, but brother nevertheless. I quirked an eyebrow at him. “Eric?” “Yeah,” he said with a nod. “He’s your brother, after all, and a warrior as well. Maybe this would make him happy.” As I stared at the amulets, I realized that Adrian was right; Eric had been down since yesterday. I think that what I had said last night at dinner about how he treated girls had hurt him. Maybe this would cheer him up.

“What’s happened to my brother?” James’ whole body went stiff as stone. “It appears that your brother has been in a severe accident while on an excavation dig in Egypt. According to what I’ve been told, they didn't have the necessary medical equipment there and decided to fly him back as soon as possible.” My throat felt dry and tight from the gut-wrenching cry I forced myself to hold back. “I’m on my way now.” I ended the call and felt a horrible wave of surreal numbness flood through me. James gathered me in his arms and tried to get me to focus. He must have overheard the conversation and was not willing to waste time. My eyes filled with tears.

Meanwhile, Amy stared at him with wide eyes before trying to calm the injured man down. "Ouch! Selene!" Mike yelled, then froze at the cold look on her face as he began to sweat profusely. Without a word, she sat back down, her eyes never leaving his, scaring him even more. A tug on his arm made him turn his head hesitantly toward Amy, while still trying to keep his eyes on Selene, even though he knew he deserved her wrath. "Yes, Princess?" he asked politely. "My brother's still not back," Amy whispered, fear in her big brown eyes.
