Not weaker. Uneasy. As though sensing something approaching. Aurelia's face went pale. Because she recognized the feeling. After thousands of years— Orion was getting closer. Orion stared at the photograph. Then at Aruna. Then at Salvatore. And suddenly he stood. Ignoring the pain from his wound. Ignoring the blood. Ignoring everyone's protests. "I know where it is." Silence. Absolute silence. Aruna stared at him. "What?" Orion looked directly at her. His voice barely above a whisper. "The playground." The words meant nothing to everyone else. But not Aruna. Terrified. "What do we do?" one of them asked. The younger Orion stared toward a distant convergence horizon where darkness continued spreading. His answer echoed through time. "We bury the memory." The vision shattered. Aria gasped. Reality returned. The hidden chamber reappeared around her. The alarms continued. The tremors continued. Everything continued. Yet now she understood what lay beneath the sanctum. Not a monster. Not exactly. A memory. The oldest memory civilization had tried to forget. Orion looked toward her.

The memory dissolved before she could understand it. Ama stumbled. Naomi caught her. “Ama!” She was shaking. “I saw…” The words refused to come. She had seen something. Someone. And the grief attached to that memory was so deep it barely felt human. Orion looked at her with growing horror. “No.” The silver-eyed Architect took a slow step backward. “It can't be.” Ama forced herself to look at him. “What can't be?” Orion didn't answer immediately. His attention remained fixed on the eye beneath the river.
