They did not rise this time. They erupted. Blackness spilled from him across the snow, swallowing rose petals, stones, and light. The soul lights scattered. Villagers screamed. Queen Amara lifted one trembling hand, but her magic flickered too weakly to hold him. Cassian slowly turned his head toward Damien. The thing looking out through his eyes was not fully him.
